A NEW DAY, ch. 5: In the Name of Love

With a sigh of relief, Simon pulled his stethoscope from Kaylee’s bare belly and pulled the blankets back over her. Looking to him with expectant eyes, Kaylee bit her lip, waiting for Simon’s diagnosis. Leaning down and kissing her lightly, Simon told her, “You’re fine and they’re fine. The three of you are doing quite well.”

Releasing her own sigh of relief, Kaylee’s eyes watered a bit and she blinked the tears away. Squeezing the hand he’d placed over hers, Kaylee took another deep breath and then allowed herself to relax into the softness of the bed. “Thank the stars,” she murmured, allowing her other hand to rub along her stomach.

Smiling at her again, Simon moved away from her to place his instruments back in his bag and then returned to her side, sitting on the edge of the bed and placing a hand to her face. Opening her eyes to him, she smiled, that big, bright, beautiful smile that always made his heart stop. Returning the grin, Simon could not believe how much better he felt just knowing that Kaylee and the twins were in better health.

Knowing that Kaylee was stabilized also meant he could finally tell her his plan and start the preparations to get her to the Core, where he’d be assured that she and the babies would be happy and healthy. Stroking her cheek gently with his thumb, Simon told her softly, “I love you, Kaylee.”

Beaming even wider at him, Kaylee covered his hand on her cheek with her own and turned her face to kiss his palm, murmuring, “I love you.”

Clearing his throat, Simon was uncertain how exactly to go about this. He knew based on his conversation with Inara and his mother that this was probably not going to go well, but he had

Glad to have Zoe back on board Serenity, feels all manner of right. Am worried about Kaylee and the babies so fingers crossed that all will turn out okay in the end. Ali D :~)

How did Simon wind up with such a selfish family? If Kaylee, River, and Old Man Tam keep this up, they're going to wind up killing him with their various agendas.

As it is, only the children seem to be behaving like adults.

I hope everything works out okay.

I feel for Mal and hope he gets back to Inara soon.

Chapter 6, here we come!

Simon's going to snap from all the stress. Poor man. There's only so much a body can take.

Problems with the babies, Kaylee unhappy with Simon because he wants her to go to Osiris, and Rylee being all kinds of ominous, something is going to have to give soon. . . of course, no doubt, it will be all kinds of angsty! :)

Oh wow...I gotta agree with Leiasky. Simon's gonna snap from all the stress he's going through (and will go through once things get all pear-shaped). He's got a wife still suffering mentally from what happened 5 years ago, a sister who's taking on more and more of her father's behavioural tendancies and a little girl with burgeoning psychic powers who's all manner of upset over the upcoming birth of her new siblings...and whatever his father's got up his sleeve. Man I don't envy Simon right now:(

Though I don't like Kaylee's reaction when Simon tells her of the plans for her to go to Osiris (“If’n I’m in such bad shape, why’re you sendin’ me away?” she asked him, the edge in her voice dropping just a bit. “Don’t wan’ the burden, huh?”), I think it is perfectly in character due to her stress and hormone levels and what happened before (though throwing it in his face that he missed Daniel's birth is a bit low, seeing as he couldn't help that one).

After four years of marriage and a child, Mal could still be incredibly dense.
~ some things never change I suppose

hoped that whatever Rylee was feeling was just a result of her overactive imagination and not a true indicator of worse things to come
~ riiiight, like things could ever go that smooth for anyone on the crew

Love your stories, but I can't believe River would ever endanger Simon or Kaylee's families this way. I just think she'd be a lot sneakier and deadly. Strike from the black, get what she needed, and then disappear off the grid.
