A NEW DAY, ch. 1: Double Trouble
***
Kaylee threw up again, the fifth time that morning if her counting abilities could be trusted, and then, with a heavy sigh and a few tears, she sank back on her heels, her head hanging.
It wasn’t fair – she was certain of that. She had been pregnant twice before and while each time she’d had bouts of morning sickness it had always dissipated after her first three months. But not this time; now in her sixth, close to seventh month, she was still waking every day with nausea and often could not keep more than a few bites of food down. And she was tired of it.
With another heavy sigh, Kaylee bit back a rush of tears as her stomach again churned violently. It was early, really early and she had managed to get out of bed without waking Simon, but now she wished she had. He had been wonderfully supportive, taking on more than his fair share of parenting duties as she had been down and out over the past six and a half months, but she was so worn out, so exhausted that she wished there was something more he could do for her. As selfish as it was, it was the truth.
Sitting back a bit more, Kaylee rubbed her belly lightly and felt one and then another sharp kick to her side. Gasping a bit at the ferocity, Kaylee figured that her little ones weren’t any happier at being awakened at all hours than she was.

And when they all find out River's been looking for that antidote, they'll be mad about something else too!
Ahh, the angst that's building. . .
But won't the Alliance find it a bit suspicious that Regan Tam turns up with a pregnant girl?
~My wife had 9 months of this with both of our sons, condition called HG (hyperemesis gravidarum, IIRC). Thank the heavens for Medicaid and Zofran.
I like the Mal/Inara scene, very fluffy, though I am sure that it is only setting the stage for more angst.
I actually wrote the HG comment as I read the story, so it's neat to see that you actually mentioned it. I know it is no fun, my wife being hospitalized twice with the first son and once with the second for it. Dehydration is a nasty sort of thing.
I am rather glad you balanced out the Silee uber-angst with the Mal/Inara angst and the Rayne love-in moment. Helps balance out the emotional side of this story and gives the reader some positive thoughts to hold on to when you decide to make all the BDHs suffer painfully;)
