Yet another idea that came to me in the middle of the night and refused to let me sleep.

This was originally supposed to be a nice little oneshot with an ambiguous ending. Well, that may have changed in the course of writing and beta'ing. We'll see how the muses hold up.

The title, while not one of my favorites, was appropriate. It is derived from one of Jayne's lines in the film. 'Now that she's a killer woman we ought be bringing her tea and dumplings.'

Thanks to Tamsibling for the beta.

“She goes all woolly again we’re gonna have to put a bullet to her.”

The memory of Jayne’s words flowed through her mind like a mantra. But it would not happen. It couldn’t. She wouldn’t let it. Another time, maybe. When she was done with her current task.

She gazed unflinchingly down at the blood-covered sheets.

Blood. It flowed hot and sticky over her fingers as she plunged the kitchen knife into his chest over and over until startled eyes closed and his body went limp. Crimson spilled from the corners of his mouth and down his chin where he’d tried to take a breath through pierced lungs.

Later, she would remember the annoyed look on his face as she’d interrupted an intimate moment. Then the startled gasp as the knife pierced his chest the first time, the disbelieving look of pain as the blade struck a vital organ on the way in, and yet more on the way out, the words he struggled to say each time the motion was repeated – and the screams. They would echo i

Hey! You said you wouldn't kill them any more!

This is so plausible (at least in the 'verse.) Why the BDHs don't think River could be triggered again is beyond me. This might be the one instance where Jayne is actually right!

And this idea has got my wheels spinning too ... I might have to write my own River gets triggered story!

I love the chillingness of her dream and the sudden recognition as she finds the message are just unbelievably realistic.

I want a sequel - bring it on!

and here i thought this was going to be a comedy, lol.

very intense, vivid description in this one:

"With a short, breathy gasp, River bolted upright in bed, limbs tangled in bed sheets and hair sticking wildly to her sweat-soaked cheeks."

and of course the whole murdering bit...

i wonder if the academy's hold on her is still this strong after miranda though. when she woke up from that dream, i actually thought she was going to leave serenity. maybe take a shuttle, or maybe just leave jubal early style to save her brother. i'd also love to see her brain flash back to some childhood stuff, moments between the two of them, during the actual killing. bits of dialogue and the like. anyway, very intriguing!

I buy it! I totally think she could get triggered, although I do have to wonder why the Alliance never did it before, during the series...

Maybe the evil "they" just wanted to get an underhanded revenge on her and her crew. Slimey bastards.

Anyway, ripping good scene! And I mean ripping. (yuck yuck yuck) Seriously though - I can't even imagine how awful it'd be for River in the second the veil comes off. *shudder*

mal4prez, the reason it wasn't done during the series (besides it being a movie plot device possibly thought up after the series) was that the BlueHands were after her. In the comics, set between the series and the BDM, the BlueHands are killed and the Operative is sent on her trail. I suppose he decided to use a more direct approach (he did ask the woman in the beginning for everything she had on behavioral conditioning).

But suddenly, with no warning, the veil covering River’s narrowed eyes lifted and she stared in shock at the horrific death she had caused.
~Woah, that would be a hell of a feeling (akin to the opening scene of Objects in Space, with a bit more intensity)

Awww, it's only a dream. Crap on that.

Redeemed as always in the concluding paragraph. I don't think it needs a sequel, we know what is going to happen. Leaving it open like that makes it better, IMGO.

Very good and creepifyin'

When I first read this I was like, Oh GOd , NOOOO!!!" Since you've added more, my reaction is still the same!!!

>Rage burned through her veins as well as disappointment that she had completed her task so swiftly. She’d known he wouldn’t, couldn’t put up much of a fight. He was weak where she was strong. He had freed her and as she’d pierced his pale skin again and again, she was not surprised to find that he did not regret that choice at the end of his life.<

This is just a great paragraph! It sums up their relationship quickly and precisely, just like how River kills.

I can't wait for the sequel!

Whoah!

This was amazing! It was very much in character for River. I liked the rich descriptions during her 'mission' and felt as though I was totally inside River's mind.

There was a great twist at the end too.

Chilling stuff Leia. Well executed!

I see what you're saying RismyG, and I've read the comics. But the Blue Hand guys could have gone after her that way too. Or the baddies at the Academy could have put out behavioral triggers instead of going to the Blue Hands...

Help! I am hyperventilating with panic here, please don't let River kill them! What makes this so very chilling is that it is entirely possible to imagine this happening. Who knows what conditioning has been embedding in her brain? Oh good gorram, let's hope Simon wakes up in time to say his 'safe' word and turn the assassin who is his sister back into a normal girl. Ali D :~)

Oh...now this would have made one hell of a cliffie ending for an episode of the series. Maybe even the last moments of a season set after the BDM's time period perhaps?

;D

Definitely would love to see a sequel...but will understand if you mean this to be only a one-shot, Leiasky:D

I am beginning to really enjoy those "ideas that come to you in the night and won't let you sleep" Leiasky!
This was wonderful and was right on with River's character and actions.

This whole thing totally fits. River spent a lot of time in the BDS and BDM in a surreal dreamscape only to tall right back into reality confused and scared.

So, there are many, but here are some of my favorite parts.....

But suddenly, with no warning, the veil covering River’s narrowed eyes lifted and she stared in shock at the horrific death she had caused. The weapon slid from her open palm to strike the floor with an unnatural clang as she flung herself onto her brother’s chest. *When I read this, I was thinking "It's getting very crowded in here!" I can completely see dropping the knife as she comes out of her spell.

She stood and watched them for a long time, burning the image of their peaceful slumbering into her mind, frantically trying to replace the disturbing, lifeless image of her nightmare. * wonderful image of someone trying to erase bad images in their head. Heck the dream itself, River being a reader...this is exactly how it would have happened. Its her brother, the images of what was to come would be more real and confusing to her.

With calm, cool precision, she stood and walked off the bridge, intent on completing her pre-programmed task. River never realized that the nightmare that had woken her from a sound sleep had not been a simple dream, but a premonition of what was to come. *I was picturing..."Miraaannddaa" as she turned to leave for Simon's room. Very cool.

Listen, this totally makes sense to me. It is very plausible that the alliance might "prompt" her to kill her brother. After all, that act might be the thing that sends her over the edge, causing her to turn herself in to them.

And now for the other totally shiny thing I loved about this fic.....

And that it..

The title!

Its what she is, an assassin, a "Killer Woman". No other title would have done this fic justice.

I know this was a one shot, and believe me it stands very well on its own, however, you have created a plot line that you could use at a later date if you wanted.

Great writing Leiasky. The fic flowed well, and I completely understand it, no confusion here. I loved it and can't wait to read more!

I was gripped from the start, leiasky!

Nowing that you can do this sort of things makes me...worried in a way, but a good way, lol!

Agree with everyone, you are the voices of these people we've come to love so much....and I'm into the next chapters right now...then I'm going for a large drink....a really large one!

Amazing work, Leia!
