Okay, last blog was in December. It's September now. WHAT THE HELL HAVE I BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST NINE MONTHS??!! Oh, right.. full-time student plus being a Mom and stuff. Um. I haven't failed anything. I still like learning. There is a shocking lack of chocolate in my life at this moment. I need to re-watch the BDS and BDM. Someday. When I have time to watch something [i]other[/i] than Sal Khan's video lectures. (Khan Academy, you have saved my ass more times than I care to count!) I'm still married. Yes, despite moving by ourselves in 90F+ weather plus high humidity. (That's well in excess of 35C for those using that scale). I'm too busy to sit and write fanfic right now. I'm not sure if (someday) I should pick up where I left off, or start something new, or just leave well enough alone.

First, I want to say how grateful I am to have forums like this as an outlet; my girlfriend may just leave me if I say another word about BDS to her! As an average SciFi/ comic nerd, I love and appreciate all the big names, Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, etc. I've become pretty knowledgeable with the back-stories, canon, apocryphal, and just plain made up. Then came Joss Whedon. These characters are just amazing, whether you talk about BTVS, Angel, Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse or Firefly, it's the finest storytelling ever. They pulled at emotions dormant in me that I never knew television medis cold Joss has officially pushed me into true geekdom and obsession, to the point where I feel inspired to, nay OBLIGATED to make a showing at D*C in 2012, in full Mal costume. This will be my first convention experience ever! So, here I am!

Had a good night, after geeking it up with a closet Browncoat at the local bar, I showed her my copy of Dr. Horrible. She insisted on watching it when she realized it was a Joss project. It was amazing watching her reactions change from act to act... up to the final shock. When the words "Directed by Joss Whedon" hit the screen, and she realized it was over, she cried out "Why isn't there more?!" The level of despair in her voice... *whispering for effect*... PRICELESS!

I've been in Lost Dog Hell for the last three days. My dog Paige got out when Dad was doing yard work. For three days we had no idea where she was. We had fears of her being dead by the side of a road, being used as bait by a dog fighting ring, being hurts somewhere...all the usual things that people fear when the their pets go missing. We put up posters and newspaper ads and waited. I found her yesterday (the local Beagle Rescue group had picked her up and fostered her until they saw my Craig's List plea). I cannot even [i]imagine[/i] what parents of missing children go through! My plea goes out to anyone breeding pit bulls or chihuahuas to make money on the side: please STOP! The animal shelters are full of them!! They are the saddest places on earth and more than half of the dogs I saw in them this week were very sad, scared pit bulls and chihuahuas! And if anyone loves those breeds and wants one, don't buy them from backyard breeders or pet stores! Go to the shelter and save a life! They need to have GPS trackers for pets!

And I clicked over here yesterday, and I browsed the BSR a little bit, and then I hit my profile, and then I looked at the date.... ....and I couldn't help noticing that it was two years to the day since I put up the prologue of the 'Where They Don't Follow' rewrite. And I've barely touched it and haven't posted a word of it since. Don't ask me what the hell happened there, and don't ask me where the hell my muses got off to. Please do tell me, though, if you want to see more of it so I can be sure I won't just be wasting time and Haken's web space whenever I get round to posting more.

Terra Nova. Great idea. I wanted to like it. I TRIED to like it. I marked it on my calendar. I eagerly awaited it. And then I saw it. And now I do not like it. Mainly because of the horrible dialog and the ridiculous plot points. The concept is great, could have been fabulous. But.. For one, the dialog was wooden, and unbelievable. For instance, when Taylor is creeping on the lady doctor, and asks her why she came to TN when she could have had all sorts of luxuries, she answered with this speechy monlogue about a better world for her kids. Which is a no brainer, and needed to be established, but not like that. She's a doctor in a clinic. She's busy, she's in the trenches. She could have said, for instance, "You know what it's like there! And I don't want my kids to grow up like that. Pass that gauze." And a whole lot of other cliched, boring statements that the actors tried valiantly to make interesting, but sadly, they just could not. Like: "That pretty girl was you." Yawn. And certain plot points: For instance, Taylor would never (or should never) let the doctor, their only one I presume, but even so, a valuable person, risk herself and go OTG to look for her son. Just a stupid move, and higly unbelievable since he's supposed to be this hard-assed leader who's really good at ensuring the survival of their settlement. And the Sixers,- they went to all the trouble to rescue that guy Carter, but when another of their number is made quick lunch for the "Carnos" (was there really a species we named that? Seems stupid, "carno." We get it. They eat meat)by being snatched head first from his armored vehicle (shades of Jurassic Park, only they used a toilet...hmmm), nobody ever mentions him again! And I do not believe for one second that the girl who panicked and ran would not have ended up in a carno digestive track. That just destroyed the suspense thing for me right there (what there was left of it). Those boys are supposed to be DANGEROUS (another Jurassic Park rip-off: Smart velociraptors anyone?), and a good story of this nature would have the "guy who dies to prove the situation is serious," (thanks, Galaxy Quest). Not a "thank god nobody died" moment. And at the end. Taylor DOESN'T tear the girl a new one after she got them all into that fix. He just stares dreamily off into the forest, looking for all the world like he's a little drunk. And, and, and--ENOUGH of telling us that the cop and his son are alike! (Sorry. I didn't even bother to learn all their names.) Bam Bam Bam! Concept driven into our skulls!! Mission accomplished! Next time, though, SHOW, don't tell--the golden rule of good writing. Special effects: excellent. Acting: good, but they had a lot to overcome. Direction: Crap, since even horrible scripts can be made to look better than they are by a clever director, and this one was not. All in all, a big, expensive, gleaming pile of...gose. We are a little spoiled here. Joss Whedon wrote a good story, with realistic dialog and believable plot points. But gorram it! Everything should be written that way! (In a perfect world.)TN looked to me like some producers were sitting around trying to come up with a new fall blockbuster, but they had no inkling of what sci fi is all about. They seemed to think that if they dress something up like a sci fi epic, it'll BE a sci fi epic. Sorry. Doesn't work that way. You have to have a love of the genre, if only to understand what the @#$%!*$ you're doing!! Well! I feel better now. Been steaming since Monday.
