In the Beginning there was .....UHF
Tuesday, 15 February 2011 15:17:56

Late 70s early 80s, an apartment complex just north of the 10 freeway in Southern California. Friday night, late, and me turning through the original SyFy channels.....UHF. Some of you remember, the channels past 13, that secondary knob on the TV. Back when you used to have to get up and TURN the channel. Yeah, some of you remember. UHF was my intro to science fiction movies. I was a Latchkey Kid. Single mom in an apartment complex surrounded by single moms. I loved those B movies on those fuzzy UHF channels late in the night. The only thing better was the Miniature Golf complex about a mile west on 7th Street. Room after room of sci-fi fantasy where for a quarter I could become a Starship Captain and test my mettle against the scourge of the galaxy. I think it was 1984 when I achieved my moment of true Fandom. A friend of mine and a fellow sci-fi fan came running over to my apartment after school one day. He breathlessly tried to tell me to turn the TV to channel 11...........ROBOTECH. I know now that that was the moment of backlighting and angelic music. A moment when I was elevated to true FANDOM. Since that time I have fallen in love with sci-fi. I have read and watched and absorbed so many wonderful stories. Become involved in multiple worlds and even universes that were truely amazing. But not one of those spoke to me the way Firefly/Serenity has. There are many reasons visited by many people for which the same can be said. Like Mal I was a soldier once, a Marine actually. 3rd Battalion 1st Marine Regiment Weapons Company. Infantry baby, everything else is just support. I experienced my own Serenity Valley. A failure that still is a dark space in my soul to this day. And like Mal I have kept flying.

Updating the condition

So ... still unemployed, which is not good news at a time like this, with so many other people looking for jobs. The last response I had was that there had been over 200 applications! Maybe I need to offer money to employ me ... As to the writing side, me and Angellemarcs are still working on BOUNCING BALL, which is a collaboration ... or possibly the results of our two words colliding! We're enjoying it, even if others aren't. Still working on BLOW THE MAN DOWN, too, which is a Castle fiction uploaded on another site. I'd upload here too if there was a section for oddly-connected-to-Firefly works ... Haken, are you listening? And then INDIGO ... well, I know it's been a long time between chapters, but I know where I'm going now. Although, in all honesty, I don't know how long it's going to take to get there! And I am wondering if it's worth it - I have a vague feeling that readers are not enjoying it (see the latest chapter with over 80 reads and no comments), so not sure what to do. Knowing me I shall slog on regardless! The rest of my life is pretty much the same. I was going to join a gym but at twice what I was able (or willing) to pay I just can't afford it. Then I was going to go swimming this week at least twice, but I've done something to my back which means it's painful when I move, so that's on hold. And my love life is hit and miss at the best of times! Okay, that's got all that off my chest, so I shall let you all get on with whatever it is you're doing. Oh, and one last thing ... if you've got stories to upload here, DO IT! What's stopping you?

Firefly Perfection
Sunday, 20 February 2011 14:33:11

Good morning Browncoats I’ve been gone a while so I’m doing a little update on my blog here. First of all I want to say that someone sent me a PM a few days ago about story ideas and I’m sad to say that it was deleted so, my apologies and please send it to me again. I’d love to hear from ya. Now secondly, I want to say that I have a bad habit. Well maybe that isn’t totally correct. I will say that I have a tendency to analyze things, things of interest to me. If it’s something I like I will tend to study the issue in detail. My wife and I talk about this frequently, so I guess you could say that it’s good and bad. It does have me siding with the conspiracy theorists with the idea that nothing happens without purpose. Anyway,…… DETAIL, this is something that helped me really become a browncoat. I’ve studied nearly every episode of the Firefly series and found it to be as near perfection as one might ask for. There is no wasted dialogue, no overly obscene focus on one character or another, no bizarre storyline that is just beyond imagination and no “ no guts-no glory …we work for a higher purpose” feel. It’s just 9 individuals looking for the meaning of what their time in the universe is meant to be. I can watch the series a thousand times and this is the feeling I always come away with. Moreover I think it’s the feeling the cast and crew of that fine structure of work came away with. Still in all, there is no more. Wait! I am getting a vibe that there may be some hope in the works. Be that as it may I won’t kill myself waiting….but….I will still HOLD if that makes any sense? I guess that why I consider myself a browncoat. We fought in the battle of Serenity Valley knowing the war was near over and the outcome looked bleak….still we were there, and we did it. It’s been nearly 10 years since they killed Serenity and Firefly, yet the embers are still glowing. Such is the way if you really enjoy and love something. My hat is off to my fellow brothers and sisters in arms…..we are still HOLDING! Z, out

Hard Head 1
Monday, 21 February 2011 01:12:25

I’ve been asked several times recently how my face managed to get in the way of a hard-hitting tree branch. I was going to write this a few days ago but my headaches just wouldn’t let me concentrate very much. Things seem to be better today so I’ll get this out now while I’m thinking about it. If you really want to know. Keep reading and don’t complain about the length! I’ve always been told that I have a hard head and late on a Thursday afternoon (10 Feb 2011), I found out that having a hard head isn’t always a bad thing. I’m living in the boonies so there are challenges that occasionally arise that one doesn’t normally encounter in city life. This was one of those challenges. I have two ways to get to the dirt road that leads to the highway ... one short and rough and the other is long and bumpy. Some time ago, a storm blew over a couple of trees on the short track. Most of the branches were bound up in the upper part of other trees so only a couple of large branches actually blocked the track. I cut them out of the way. Over time, the large tree has been gradually easing downward. A couple of weeks ago, I finally had to cut another branch that had sunk low enough to prevent me from driving out. I frequently walk the track when I walk the dogs to check it. About a week after the last branch had been cut, I discovered that the tree had sunk even lower with several branches now blocking the path. I procrastinated until that Thursday afternoon. I wanted to go to town on Saturday morning and I figured that I could easily cut and clear the branches in two days. I put some water, the pruners, and a pruning saw into my little backpack and slipped it on. I put on my boonie hat, grabbed the machete which I always take with me when I go into the woods, and grabbed the ax. The dogs were excited to go for a walk and we all headed up the track.

Hard Head 2

I staggered back a step or two as my brain tried to figure out what the heck was happening. I took a knee but realized that I wasn’t going to be able to even hold that position as tunnel vision ensued. Even worse, I couldn’t see out of my left eye and I had a panicked thought that it had been smashed. I could feel blood on my face and I afraid that my eye was a bloody pulp. I went to my hands and knees.

The New Movie idea...more to come...

Roughly: 30 years past......just as we witnessed with river's "fruity oogie bars" incident has developed. all throughout the outer reaches of the galaxy unsuspecting teens r causing massive destruction. is this an alliance plan to use these special minds as weapons to wipe out the lesser regions of the galaxy with the perfect cover up of it being all that jazz those youngsters are watching on the space tube? was river actually allowed to escape to get out and at that moment have the "fruit oogie bar" incident? mal, resting comfortably with his feet in some sorta space pool with a space brew in his mitt...is that a critter i see afoot?? he's stairing at a picture of Anura....Jayne's with em tho. with smimmes. over the lil dispatcher module they have sitting in between em (they run specialty jobs from time too time just for the adrenaline flow ever since the "the big heist" which is to come in another story) is the good ole doc,. He states to Mal and Jayne to get over to the RiverFlowBrainPain(River named it, i dunno) that River, with his help, and the massive growth of the resistance movement fighting the resistance. Probably gonna have something to do with this, for lack of a better term, "fruity oogie bar" syndrome. The boys better saddle up....

Channy? Where for art thou?
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 14:02:21

Here for I art! Oh, where did I go for six years? Well, that's a very long story that I'll sum up here in a few words. College. I didn't figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up until I turned 35. So I spent April 2004 to June 2009 getting a bachelor's degree in graphic design with a Web design emphasis while working full time and spending the last part of it tag-teaming the care of an aging parent with my siblings. Yeah... Try it. A watercolor that I did for an illustration project using Nathan Fillion's face is evidence of how I worked Firefly into every quarter of school. Crazy? Well... I was basically going to art school in a crappy economy. Personal loss. My parents died within two years of each other. Mom died June 1, 2008, six days before my 41st birthday. Dad died a year ago on March 31, eight days after my brother's 40th birthday. That anniversary is coming up. No, I don't care if you know how old I am. I'll never tell you how much I weigh, though. And if you think I'm too old to feel like an orphan? Think again. College again, as of October 2010. Web design this time, just an associate's degree because I'm word and design schmawt, not back-end developer schmawt. Thanks to all the credits that transferred in, though, that's five classes in three quarters only - woo! Yup, still working full time. Starting a freelance graphic design business... yeah, gimme another latte, would'ja? And yet, through it all, I keep peeking in back here. Not nearly as often as I should, but John Lennon was a true philosopher: "Life is what happens while you're making other plans." Amen, bruddah.

V - The cheese, it burns ... [spoilers]
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:34:20

I feel like we need to talk about V, the show that seems to try jumping the shark every week, but never quite succeeds. Watching the latest episode (2x07, I guess) over a cup of hot chocolate, it occurred to me just how random this show has become lately. We are now really deep in the sci-fi cheese. Characters are handing other characters glowy things and women are hitting each other because nothing says awesome writing better than fisticuffs. Two scenes were particularly cringe-worthy this time - first, the "Lisa making out with other dude" sequence. He said the ship is nice, she said he looked handsome and swiftly proceeded to stuck her tongue down his throat. Sure, whatever (though I have to say, that was one lucky guest actor). But what took the cake was the uber-clichéd "erotic tension moment" during the safe opening scene which came out of nowhere and cracked me up, given that Mitchell and Mesure have zilch on-screen chemistry. That was something straight out of an awful romantic comedy. If the writers are really going to push this insane notion, I'm gonna be sick. Also, the whole bit about the vitamin pills containing alien crawler things was a complete throwaway. The what do what? Alright then ... And how about that brilliant solution to the baby issue? ("The baby annoys the audience and is difficult to work with on set - okay, here's an idea, let's make it older WITH MAGIC!"). Riveting stuff. But then again, sometimes the show has an interesting weird poetry about it. Take the scene where Lisa reluctantly embraces her grandmother, thereby embraces human emotions (sort of). I wish they would stick to those basic concepts instead of Jack Bauer shenanigans in not-actually Hong Kong.

back to Firefly
Thursday, 24 February 2011 05:58:02

It has been a while since I've come to this site (probably not since Serenity came to theaters -sorry fireflyfans.net). It's been so long that I've signed in that I couldn't remember what email address that I last used here. (I had an old one that I deleted and only figured that it was that). But no, my sign in email address was the one I was trying to sign up for a new login and not only that, I was using the same password (funny to me). I really miss the show and glad for the DVD's and Serenity. I try to keep myself going by (trying to remember to watch) watching V (for Morena Baccarin), Castle, (Nathan Fillion) and the Cape (Summer Glau) but you know what, Firefly was the best show these actors have ever been in! The reason that I've come back to fireflyfans.net is because tonight I seen trending on Yahoo was Firefly. Wahoo! Nothing new for the show (you know, new episodes/movie) but that it's going to be on the science channel with a special science commentary. I'm glad for Firefly to be back on Tv, but I'm in fear of this commentary killing Firefly. Are they going to like analyze a lot of things in the TV series that don't need analyzing? I don't even know if I get the Science channel, but if I do I will have to check the show out so that I can see the commentaries. (Oh and fans of Firefly who add in their artwork: for most of what I've seen tonight here on this website - y'all are very creative/artistic!

Where am I?
Saturday, 26 February 2011 12:59:19

Hi. I was writing a fanfic called River's Run more than a year ago and all kinds of crazy things ahppened which kept me getting back to it. Things with work, family, and health to begin with and then I had several major writing projects of my own that pay real cashy money (shiny!) which I had to finish (mostly English education books) and soon I found that a long time had passed since I was on this site. So my apologies to all those who got as far as they did in my third series and then were left hanging. I hope to pick it up again soon so it will be finished eventually.

Unemployed
Sunday, 27 February 2011 00:15:24

For the first time since before I got married (2004) I am unemployed. My boss fired me yesterday, for some semi-legitimate reasons, but it's not all bad. The entire time I worked there, I felt like I was the black sheep of the family instead of a member of the team. That's the problem with support staff - we never get the appreciation and recognition we deserve. So...anyone know of any job openings with companies that actually make ALL of their employees feel like they're appreciated?

Re-Inspired
Monday, 28 February 2011 15:09:25

So, for a week, everything around me led to Firefly. I'd either quote it or someone would ask me about it or I'd see something in the news (man, i love the Science Channel right now...) about it and I thought: Well. It's time to have a Firefly Weekend. Settled in to watch the series, ordered Chinese food, looked at some fine rice wine longingly (not really a fan of the taste) and remembered how much I love this show. And I realized it's been a long while since I posted here. So. Here we are. And I even plopped a short fic up in the BSR for anyone interested. And, while listening to a new cd, I realized how easily I can apply songs to my fascination with this beautiful, wonderful, fantastic show. ...i miss Firefly...this site helps...
