I had a very fine moment last week - one that was completely unexpected. One of our students is autistic. After story time when the other kids were running around looking at books, he was sitting on the floor looking fuddled. I held my arms out and he came and gave me the biggest hug and then just stayed there in my arms. It was a perfect moment of sweetness. There was no ulterior motive or expectation to it - he just wanted somewhere to be safe for a minute. In that moment I knew that I would absolutely protect this child from anyone who might do wrong by him. What a perfect little moment of privilege and grace I had. Perhaps I should have been a parent after all.

...there is an excessive and magnified reaction. Employed, single again, back in school, kids are well, even seeing someone new. Life is good. Whoops! What's this? I missed the memo. Apparently I am not permitted happiness. Some arcane curse was cast upon me and no one told me. I now have lateral epicondylitis (a tendon in my elbow is deteriorating; more commonly known as "tennis elbow"), and injury I received by doing my job. But that's not all! The kids' mother has been diagnosed with Leukemia. A treatable form, yes, but it means she probably won't be working any more, and probably won't come visit them any time in the forseeable future. And I know this sound selfish, but I'm the one who has to deal with the ramifications, the children and the fact there won't be child support. To be clear, I wouldn't wish such a thing on anyone, and I do hope she gets better, but it hurts my world nonetheless. Think I am done? NOPE! Some hoe tze duh pi gu hit my car pulling out of his driveway, and now I have no vehicle. And the kicker? *I* got cited. Sure I am fighting it, but in the mean time, it puts a HUGE financial burden on me. One I can't bear. I may lose my job, lose my housing, can't go to physical therapy, everything because some asshole failed to yield. Total go se. So, is it Christmas? It must be, because the whole damned 'verse is falling apart like toys on Christmas Day. Fair certain that if the moon fell on me right now, it'd somehow be my fault, and I'd somehow survive to get sued. :crap:

After about four years of complete "fandom" inactivity I just read up on the current state of the Firefly/Serenity canon, mostly by sifting through firefly.wikia.com. Much to my surprise, the mysterious stories of Book and Inara are not quite so mysterious anymore. In the case of Book, the character backstory has been told in complete detail in form of comic books, and from what I read it's not as intriguing or inventive as I hoped and it doesn't really add up for me in terms of believability. Of course, I haven't read the actual comic books themselves(yet), so my initial impression could be completely off here. I also followed a link to a youtube video from 2008 in which Ms. Baccarin more or less openly spills the beans on Inaras big secret, at least partially. If this is indeed considered canon (it's "Joss approved", they say), I regret reading and watching it because a) it's a big fat bummer and b) the magic of “not-knowing” is gone now. This is what you get for spending years completely out of the loop, I guess.

Okay, I made it. Semester's finished, no classes failed surprisingly enough, and I'm in the middle of winter break. Time with the fam, big party in two days, lots and lots do to. This includes reviewing the first chemistry course I took this summer for the second one I'm taking this spring, as I can't remember which way the size and reactivity increase and how to properly balance a chemical equation and predict the outcome. Plus packing up/organizing my sewing room so that it can just be my study area through at least July. And I'll be spending the first three to five weeks of summer doing research in the Adirondacks six miles out by boat from the nearest village. Note to self: If Red Cross doesn't schedule another Wilderness First Aid course soon, see if you can get hold of one of the books and self-study. Also: pack lots of rain gear, beekeeping veil, and deet. Use Deep Woods Off like it was deodorant. (Me + woods = rain and biting insects the entire time.)Also also: learn to identify poison ivy in several states of growth.
