4:09pm I love the Christmas lights on the top of the screen! Thanks Haken! I'm feeling better. I've stopped shaking like a junkie and it feels like I might be able to stay in my skin another day. I'm not sure what's worse, coughing all night or this inhaler that is suppose to stop the coughing. We had a nice turkey weekend (except for the whole dog barfing incident.) We're working our way through the Indiana Jones movies and the leftovers. I'm beginning to think that my idea for a green chili turkey casserole isn't so bad. It isn't very cold here, though the wind has picked up. I'd love to live in a place where it snowed. It snowed in Washington but never on Christmas. I want just enough snow to be pretty but not so much snow that you can't get anywhere. And I want a pony. Be kind to one another. ___________________________ We were all wounded in some domestic war

So, I got bored the other night and got in my car and drove around, looking for a companion or two. I had forty bucks in my pocket. Spotted two ladies on the corner of 8th Street and Vine. I pulled up next to them and waved my dollar bills through the window. "Hey, Ladies," I said. "Hop in." "Uh, sorry, no," said one of the girls. She was a long legged beauty with green eyes and a smile that could make a Chinese man swear in English. "We're Companions, we get to choose," said the other. She was shorter than her partner, but her heavy bosom rose and fell impressively as she smiled condescendingly at me. My ears began to burn. "What?" I asked. "You get to choose? Hey look, I got the forty dollars, so why don't you---" "A Companion always chooses," she interrupted, "and we do not choose you. Move along now." They stared at me coldy and I knew the matter was settled. I drove home, alone and utterly humiliated. I could feel the unspent forty dollars burning painfully in my pocket. "Fuck those bitches!" I cursed angrily. "How dare they tell me no. Fuck! What am I supposed to do now?"

Well, I'm reading some threads and fanfics, and I realize that most fans of shows/movies/etc. have a collective name. Star Trek, Trekkies; MST3k, MSTies; Firefly, Browncoats. But, I thought, what do Star Wars fans call themselves? The best I've heard is Jedi. Any suggestions?

12:54 pm So the Christmas tree is up, some of the presents are wrapped and I’m feeling fairly holly and jolly. I like having the work part of the holidays behind me and the enjoyment part ahead of me. I’ve been looking over our Christmas ornaments and remembering where and when we got some of them. The wooden Christmas tree with the glitter came from my baby sister’s grammar school craft fair (the baby is now 25.) The purple glass balloon on a stick we got on Pier 39 in San Francisco when my husband and I were first dating. There are a bunch of flat wooden ones that I painted when I was in junior high. Then there are the ornaments that various little sisters and nieces gave us for the holidays. All those little girls are now out on their own having grownup lives. It’s funny but nowhere do I have an ornament that resembles Succatash’s big, red shiny Christmas balls. (Sarahetc, you owe me a buck!) I’ve also been thinking about the coming year. I don’t really do the whole resolution thing. I set goals and adjust them as the year goes on. I’ve been thinking about doing another half-marathon. This is really surprising because when I dragged my carcass across the finish line in late May of 2003, I thought to myself, “Great! I’ve done it! Now I never have to do it again!” So why consider it again? Well, it’s like this. I need to exercise and it helps to have a goal. There are two kinds of runners in this world whippets and penguins. You know the whippets, you’ve seen them. They are the really long and lean runners with a stride that looks like fluid poetry. No wasted movement, just muscles and lungs propelling them forward in grace and beauty. I’m not a whippet. I’m a penguin (thanks to John Bingham for coining the phrase.) I’ve got the kind of body resplendent with curves and hips. I manage to get to the finish line but it’s my training that helps my body get over the miles, not any kind of natural athletic ability or talent. So I’m thinking about another half-marathon probably in the fall of the year. More to follow. So tonight is my writing group and I’ve got some errands to run. So, yu-gi-oh was a distraction as I snuck past the alliance guards exiting the depository. The weather was pretty bleak, which set my back to hurtin' all the more than normal, still I'd rather have been shot in the ass than anywhere else in the world - that cult tv 's given me my own armour plating! Had to hunker @ work, checking the internet for details from others who were in the know - old flame had released some new plans of the lower record offices which were absolutely vital if I'm going to find anything about the corporation - but gotta hurry this processing - carry back tax deadline coming up. Most of lunch I searched the lower offices as best I could without alerting the toys R us staff to my presence - they're starting to recognise my face these days. Found some plans on old experiments into childhood development, that would explain getting the test subjects so early... I leave out under the blue sun to try and find a ride out of town, not easy round here where the horses are thin on the ground, and fatter on the plate. But manage to catch a 91 to Goldsworth Park, bustle as always - that woman with the chickens was there yesterday, wonder if she'll be there tomorrow - wonder where i'll be tomorrow. Not sure where I was today.

Someday we'll be able to look back on all of this and remember that excruciating week in December back in oh-three when we waited for the First Thirteen episodes to come out on DVD. Of course in my imagination, by that time, there will be at least five boxed sets - Seasons One through Five - standing next to the First Thirteen. Naturally, the series will have been renewed for a Sixth season, and I'll be spending yet another week counting down the days until the season opening episode. Doesn't that sound nice?

I mentioned this in the tag log today. some of ya'll are probably thinking "huh?" creative activity produces endorphins in the brain which Websters defines as "any of a group of proteins with potent analgesic properties that occur naturally in the brain." what it doesn't say is how intoxicating it can be. only when I'm drawing do I lose all track of time, sense of self as to where I am and whose coming up behind me, and even my appetite diminishes. all that matters is the image under my hands and the pencils I'm using to make it happen. I'm sure the other creative browncoats have the same thing. staying up too late on a "school night" just to finish that one detail, basking in the success of finishing it well and finally falling into bed. it's the waking up the next morning part that becomes problematic. today I think my clock radio ran for about ten minutes before I reached the surface of the deep dark purple place and realized that noise in my dream wasn't in my dream after all. unlike the usual hangover, however, I don't have a headache, or sensitivity to light and sound. what I do have is a severe sense of displacement. much as I enjoy being online with you all, I'd really rather be home at the drawing board, making it all happen all over again. so one wonders this morning, in my endorphin-induced state, if this is what it was like for the Serenity crew when the show was still running and they knew they had something great going on? how agonizing it must be for them - and for us - to be trapped in the real world when what we really want is just beyond reach.

I had shoulder surgery 2 months ago, and I recently began physical therapy. Doctor's orders: Put an ice pack on your shoulder for 20 minutes every night. So, I'm home laying on the couch with an ice pack on my shoulder. Just minding my own business, the way normal guys do. I pick up the remote, point it at my DVD player, and press PLAY. [i]"Take my love, take my land..."[/i] I begin to relax as Serenity winks at me from the TV. Then, my georgous girlfriend walks into the room. Because it's Firefly, I immediately hit the PAUSE button. She softly asks me, "Honey, are you ready to come to bed?" She is wearing see-through negligee and her boobs look really great. So does her vagina. I am stunned and aroused. I realize that her ass is wonderful also. I gasp, "But, I'm watching Firefly, how about having sex later?" She frowns at me and my genitals are on fire, but I manage to conceal my discomfort. I scowl at her and hiss, "You're in the way, I'm trying to watch Firefly!" I make the Claw sign with my left hand. Whenever I pretend to be a sorcerer and use the Claw sign, my girlfriend always gets scared and backs down. She storms off to bed, cursing, but not too loudly. Immediately, I take the ice pack off my shoulder and sit on it. I reach for the remote and press PLAY. [i]"I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me..."[/i] I am at peace at last. Well, if you have read, or are reading, or intending on reading, or even if you've never heard of it, I had a nice discussion on Hitchikker's Guide. Well, actually, The Answer. This doesn't tie into Firefly (Which, I am working on), but it's still funny. Well, my friends and I have memorised our favorite parts, which if one of us forgets a part, or mess it up, we can correct it. Kind of sad, really. I love the part on alcohol, though. I've memorised half of it. I will spare you for now. That's just me, though. Well, DVDs are so long away...3 days isn't that long, but it seems like it. Gorram, move faster, days! Speed up time just a little. If this comes, true, I will regret saying that. Ah, well. I'm wearin' my cool non-sequitur shirt today. I made it myself. 11:48am This blog will be on hiatus till after the first of the year. Now to confess the horrible, hideous truth. While ya’ll are sitting around watching the DVDs in the comfort and splendor of your homes, I will have hit the road to the land that technology forgot. That’s right folks, I’m off to my mom’s. Mom does not own a television, much less a DVD player. Much less the patience to let me sit and watch Firefly for 30 hours straight. That’s okay. I know the DVDs will be sitting in all their shiny splendor, waiting for me when I return. Couldn't resist the call of math... For those who were wondering, 'base n' just means that you have n symbols that represent digits. We all know what to do when you run out of symbols already - you just move over a place and start over (ie after 9 come 10). So, in base 2, for instance, that means you have '0' and '1' So, counting up from zero, you would represent the counting numbers as follows 0,1,10,11,100,101,110,111,1000,... In base 13, we would need 13 symbols, rather than the 10 we currently have, so, lets say our set is 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,#,$,* then counting up from zero, we would have 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,#,$,*,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,1#,1$,1*,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,2#,2$,2*,... So, 6*9, also known as 'the question'. To get 'the answer', we need to know how to write the number that in base 10 we write as '54' in base 13. Well, we can get all the way to * before we have to move places, so that means that base 13 symbol '10' = our 13, '20'=26, '30'=39, '40'=52, '41'=53, and (ta da!) '42'=54. Woo hoo!

Got behind the wheel of my 1991 Chevrolet Lumina and tried to pretend it was a 1968 Corvair Convertible. Okay, since it was 20 degrees in Minneapolis, maybe not so much the convertible part. And since the Lumina is an automatic, it was a bit of a stretch at first. Them as maybe don’t understand why a Corvair need to read the Browncoat Chronicles (this blog sponsored by Sarahetc, Chronicler extraordinaire). Since we were given a healthy snowfall the previous day (okay, only 9 inches, but still), getting from my place of employment in the northern burbs to Minnetonka wasn’t going exactly gonna go smooth. Roads were good, but the ramps were still prêt-ty prob-le-ma-tic and the last thing you want to do is spin off into the ditch. Been there, done that – do you know what a towing charge amounts to in this day and age? Kell NIGHT! As I said, road conditions were pretty darn okay, and I was cruising along. As it was Wednesday, I hadn’t taken a regular lunch break, so I swung of 169 South onto 55 West to utilize the drive-through at Arby’s. The off-ramp was coated with ice about halfway down, but there was a definite trail where other folk had been before me, so I kept the wheels in the asphalt ruts and said a little prayer. Should have been keeping a better eye on the speedometer, though, because I was going WAY too fast for the corner at the lights. Did my darnedest to slow down in time, but there was a good 10 inches of gorram snowplow goo on the curb, which means NO traction. Funny how in those kinda situations your car suddenly becomes a horse “Whoa, whoa, WHOA!” Skidded around the corner, got straightened out and made it into the frontage road, then remembered to start breathing again. From that point on I was determined to drive Wash-like; both hands on the wheel, eyes on the road. Picked up food and headed back to the freeway. Potato cakes called my name at the lights so I munched one. Then I had the beef and Swiss out of the bag. This is why I can’t complain so much about cell phone drivers. I mean if I keep making my car into a café, I really can’t kibitz about folks who turn theirs into a phone booth, can I? Once I discovered my beef and Swiss had magically transformed into a beef and cheddar, I continued south on 169 to 394 West. Did drive Wash-like on that ramp – three other cars seemed awfully confuzzled by the meter lights. Which lane am I supposed to be in? Is that the right shade of green or what? Got to the mall without further incident, and found a decent parking place by one of the main entrances. Had to walk a little ways, but no worries – 20 degrees remember? Got to Suncoast, receipt in hand and was told by the nice sales guy in the Santa hat that I was getting a heckuva deal. He checked his register over before he asked the other sales guy, “Is there a button for 'we messed up'?” Other sales guy (Eeore-like), “Yeah, just punch in three.” And there it was, my shiny DVD set in a little Suncoast sack, at half the price on the sticker no less, ready to go home with me! Naturally, I had to stop by Godiva to celebrate by buying ostentatious chocolate (it was on the way - hello?). They asked me what I bought, so of course I did some show and tell. The girl behind the counter (who knows me on sight, but that’s another story) looked at the cover and said, “Ohhh, look at all the hunky men!” The trip home was slow going because I chose to take the freeway just as rush hour was getting into full swing. Got home and it was Simon the cat and me, watching the shiny new [i]Serenity[/i] and hearing Nathan Fillion sing the Firefly theme, despite Joss’s attempts to actually comment during the commentary. “See?” I said to Simon. “There’s your namesake. Don’t worry, he’s not as smarmy as he looks.” Simon purred, Nathan giggled after getting dissed by Joss and all was once again right with the world.

Well, it was another dreary television day and I thumbed listlessly through my video collection just trying to find something, anything, some teeny tiny scrap of brillance to escape into. Finally, my eye caught the word Firefly scribbled onto a much abused tape where at least 13 other titles had been scratched on, then marked off as other new shows came and went. Yet I had saved this one tape, squirrelling it away so I wouldn't accidentally overwrite it. I remembered how I had casually taped the premier of a new series, not really caring if I had programmed the vcr correctly and accidentally got the home shopping network or some such fluff instead. When I viewed the show later I could not believe how incredibly good it was. To this day I still get chills watching the first show's intro and set-up. I only managed to tape 2 other shows when it disappeared from programming forever. So from time to time, when the 'drearies' take over, I reached for my worn out tape of Firefly for a boost. I was with great shock that I found this site, just chock full of people like me who thought that this was an incredibly well wrote, well acted and just plain well great show. Now I find out that there is a dvd with gobs of shows I never knew existed. Be still my heart, now I know what to ask Santa for. It's all shiny, eh?

I was just remembering back to the very first time I heard about Firefly. It was many months ago and my good buddy (known as Tash to y'all) called me on the phone and said I should turn it on. Unfortunately, I turned on the wrong show... a show called birds of prey, which I thought was the show I was supposed to be checking out, and so I missed Firefly. I thought to myself, this show doesn't make any sense, who is this batgirl, I don't understand. And because I thought "birds of prey" was Firefly, I didn't ever watch Firefly when it was on t.v. :disappointed: And so, I missed the first and only American run of Firefly, because I thought it was something else. Rest assured, When I finally saw the real Firefly, I was hooked. But then, y'all know the rest of the story...

Intermission Commercial: The camera pans around the galley inside Serenity. We see Jayne enter, famous hat and all, and head to the refrigerator. Jayne opens the door and the camera pulls in tight for a shot of the shelves, lined with bottles of Blue Sun Beer. Jayne grabs a beer, pops the top in his teeth, spits the cap across the kitchen and turns to the camera as he heads to the table. Jayne sets down Vera and says... "Ya know, after a long hard day of Heroics like outrunnin the alliance, or shootin' it out with some back water goon, I like ta take me a little time ta enjoy the better things in life. Thats why I grab a bottle a ice cold Blue Sun Beer, it quenches a man-sized, powerful thirst." Jayne props his leg up on the chair and start to swig the beer. After a big swallow, Jayne spits the beer out all over the table. "Gorramit! Thats the worst tastin' swill I ever done had. Tastes like rancid cat piss. Where the ruttin hell is that director, I got me some contract negotiations ta attend to." Jayne grabs Vera off the table and heads off camera. You hear muffled shouting along the lines of 'No, please it wasn't my..." Followed by several loud popping noises. Jayne heads back on camera, grabs the Blue Sun Beer Girl, turns to the camera and says... "Anyone needs me we'll be in my bunk..." Jayne talks to the girl as they leave muttering "Gonna take me a week ta git that taste outta my mouth. Tastes like a squirle done up and died under my tounge...." Jingle ensues... Blue Sun Beer It's not the best, But if you don't drink it, Your under arrest. "Hey git your gorram hand offa' me." "Breach of what, I ain't carin' what the ruttin hell you say, I ain't tellin' nobody ta drink that fermented camel dung!" "Wait how much? Well I'll be damned, must just been that one bottle, this stuff is ...uuuuuuugggggghhhhhh.... ummmm yummy yeah thats it just downright yummy...."

Being a huge Joss fan I was totally jazzed about Firefly coming out. I set my vcr to record the first show. I wasn't aware of the two hour pilot having been made and not shown. But the recording screwed up, so I immediately turned to Kazaalite to try to download it. It was confusing because it seemed to have three different titles, Serenity, The Tube, and The Train Job. So I just downloaded everything. After a little research I realized (with lots of joy) that I had sutmbled onto the unaired pilot. So I actually got to see "Serenity" BEFORE "The Train Job." It was awesome! I was hooked from the start. I loved what they did every show. Then after "Objects In Space" I found out it was being cancelled. I kept checking internet sources looking for info about whether or not Joss had gotten another network to pick it up. I was like an addict struggling for his next fix.

Well, its my first Christmas/birthday/Hanukkah (ain't life great in a mixed marriage family) away from home, and I think I'm overbaking to compensate. thus far I have made a birthday cake, bourbon balls (with a VERY nice bottle of Jim Beam - the only kentucky whiskey I could find in all of east anglia... well, cambridge), and banana bread. Up tomorrow are fudge, pancakes, and anything else I have ingredients for. Who's going to eat all of this?? The grad building I live in is deserted. I've already given a batch of bourbon balls away to the porters (the fantastic guys who guard the college/generally fix all problems). Ah, well, I could use the extra calories. Being a starving grad student has begun to take its toll. No kidding, all of my pants are hanging off me. Other than that, I'm just eagerly awaiting the UK Sci-Fi marathon of the Firefly eps at the end of the week.

Ive only just seen Firefly, only aired recently. It was a great show, its a huge shame. I got in to the show from Higher Ground really. I'm a massive fan of that old show which starred Jewel as Daisy, my fave character. I also knew Nathan from 2 Guys and A Girl, and I loved his character of Johnny. Cant wait for the dvd!

Hey all! You friendly Jedi here! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! I know that my family is having a great time. It is fabulous to have your family all sit down to dinner, then gather around to share gifts. My favorite part is that this the single day when any disagreement is outlawed. The kids all love every present they open. They'll even turn off the video games to sit down and play a board game. I'm truly blessed. So, Christmas dinner was upon me, the snow was falling, the carolers were caroling, and Civil War talk was in the air. My extremely smart and cool brother-in-law, who works for the govt, was telling the table his views on why he thought the civil war happened, and I said to him, "Have you ever heard of Firefly?" To my great surprise and delight, he responded that he had, and that it was a great show, and had much to do with the Civil War talk we were having. I agreed and we proceeded to tell each other how fabulous Firefly was and how cool we were for being fans. :biggrin: Anyway, it was the perfect thing for him to say because I had just given the Firefly dvd to my parents for Christmas and they have much respect for the opinion of my brother-in-law. Hey all, So I got the Firefly DVD set for Christmas. :smile: Let's take a moment to thank the 'rents. :kiss: Anyway, I watched the whole thing, extras and all over the last two days. It's made me sad, happy, and angry all at once. I pray Joss gets the movie made. I also think Fox was :stupid: and :evil: for not showing the show in order and for putting it on Friday night at right, a time when most young people are going out. Anyway, maybe Joss can write novel about what happened to everyone before the tv show (i.e. River, Simon trying to find her, Book, Inara leaving the Guild house, etc) and then write a novel based on the movie. Yeah, they could come out before the movie. That would truly be great.

How do you go about publishing original fiction on the net, if you aren't a webmaster? I'm working on something called Gotham Project that i'd like to get feed back on. Anyway, probably ought to write some more of SYNAM... I need to figure out what River is up to (I've given up on finding out what Book is hiding, i'll have to wait for the movie ;), is it about Star the gelding, work for Serenity or something else? That girl is very hard on the not-so-innocent bystanders. BTW, Merry Christmas, Browncoats! Also, Good Winterfair! to any fellow Bujoldistas (is that a word? :) on FFF.

My dad invited someone over, and it was late. They had noticed my MST3k/Firefly binder. (about 500 pages thick, and I still need to add Firefly stuff). So we got talking about Firefly. My dad, who at that piont had seen more episodes, was mixing up names and characters and jobs. I had to correct him, which is extreamly rare. But, it was shiny, talking about it. I told our guest that the DVDs come out Dec. 9. So, maybe that's one person who picked them up. Yea! Well, didn't remember this until I read Maniac's Christmas one, so thanks! So my brother sent me the DVDs for Solstice, and my kids and I have watched them all already. Interesting how all the ones Fox didn't air show lots of skin. Just another reason to hate Fox. Missed the eisode of "Miss Match" that Nathan Fillion was on. Hope I catch it in reruns. :disappointed: Mike's working on "Miss Match" now, which is why I started watching it. Now it's one of my new guilty pleasures. OK, have to admit, I love seeing the name "Cedar" in a show's credits! Haven't been on the site for a while. I saw the info for the movie version on IMDB. Is it really happening?

I finally got [i]Firefly - The Complete Series[/i] on DVD and, while I still have two features to watch (more if you count the audio commentaries), I have to say that this is such a great thing! I'd nearly forgotten how wonderful the show was and it's renewed my anger at Fox. They didn't even give it half a chance at life. I just hope that they get the movie deal and, perhaps as that one guy said in one of the documentaries, get another chance at life. I can't wait. Anyway, if you haven't gotten the DVDs yet, go get them. They're worth it.

I've been wanting to rant about the Firefly DVDs for awhile now, but since I only got them three days ago, I didn't have the chance. But now that I do have them, I have one word to describe them: Shiny! :biggrin: The release of the DVDs means a lot. How many shows were cancelled from the same TV season as Firefly? How many can you remember? I can recall a couple; John Doe, Fastlane, and Birds of Prey. Okay, so that's three outta a whole bunch, I'm guessing. Firefly seems to be the only one that got to be released on DVD. Why is that? Well, it's all in my crazy rant. Let's compare Firefly to John Doe. Both were on the same night and John Doe was the lead-in for Firefly. Now, I remember that the show got some good reviews from critics. Ooh, a guy can't remember a thing about himself but knows about everything else possible. Not a bad concept, right? Easier to follow than a crew of nine people living on a space ship set in a Western type future? When compared to Firefly, it even got to last a little longer before it was cancelled. A full season, 22 episodes I presume. A whole season. Firefly? 12 episodes were shown and in the wrong order no less. But did John Doe have fans urging FOX to bring it back? I'm guessing no and there's lies the reason why its only season isn't on DVD. Firefly has fans who are smart and dedicated. If I had the power to do so, I would sit down the executives of FOX, or Universal even, show them these DVDs, and ask them to watch the show as an average TV viewer and not as people who run a TV corporation. I would show them how wonderful this show is and that they were kinda stupid for cancelling it. An easy-to-follow concept and decent numbers does not always equal a hit. So [i]sheh-sheh[/i] Joss Whedon for this wonderful show and when the movie deal comes through, I'll be first in line when Firefly hits the big screen.

Yup I am a guy, and I am not ashamed to admit I damn near wept at the end of this. The music, the setting... it was just so perfect, and what a powerful metaphor for the show... truly a last episode, even though it is not chronologically.

I've found that as time goes on, genre fandom goes through some growing pains. Everybody has different ideas about how it's "supposed to be" and they can be pretty adamant about it. Some of that has been showing up here lately, but that's the nature of the beast - everybody grows in different ways. One thing that hasn't changed is the single-minded devotion we all have toward Serenity and her crew. In the past that has shown up in parallel experiences in everyday life. For me, just seeing a suede brown jacket sets me to smiling and thinking of happier times. Listed here are some of the threads that reflected that frame of thinking - threads that make me hope the devotion will remain, even when our unity fails. Let me first say how pleased I am that such a place exists for all us loyal Browncoats. I am and have been a fan of the show ever since I saw the first commercial trailer. I ain't got the words to describe the feelings I get whenever I put in one of my DVDs to watch an episode. Such a ground breaking show should never has gotten the treatment it received. It is without a doubt my most favorite sci-fi show of all time. I am very honoured to belong to such a loyal community and feel I must thank the founders of FFF for such fine work. I have found so many resources here that I have never even come close to finding anywhere else on the net. It has only strengthened my love for this franchise and all the loyal Browncoats that keep it alive. I would like to finish by quoting our favorite captain...I think he said best: "We will rise again!"
