My development system died. Will now have to test things live. Bugs galore, I'm sure.

Not exactly what I had hoped for as a first log entry, but I just found out this morning that actress Kellie Waymire aka Elizabeth Cutler on Star Trek: Enterpise has passed away last Thursday at the very young age of 35. The character of Elizabeth Cutler was a love interest of Doctor Phlox early on in the series. Waymore has appeared on many series over the years, including Voyage, NYPD Blue, CSI, and Six Feet Under. And we'll likely see her in the future when Wonderfalls air at midseason. No one should die at such a young age. Especially one so talented. I'm sure many will miss her--myself included.

Testing, testing... is this thing on? Edit: Hey, cool. It worked. Thanks Haken!

So...what's going on in my life: -Train of Thought, the new album by Dream Theater. Progressive Metal meets Nu-Metal and it is good. -Finally went scouring the 'Net for Firefly Fanfics. SHOCKED at the sheer number of Mal/Jayne/Simon slash. :Shudders: Why!? -New season of 24. 'Nuff said.
From NASA Science News: November 10, 2003: Even on the advanced spacecraft of the future, sooner or later things are bound to break. Space travelers on an extended mission to Mars, for example, would need to be ready to do small repairs just in case, soldering this, welding that.
I had such a clear image of Jayne in one of the EVA suits, welding something on Serenity's outer hull...very shiny indeed! 23 November 2003 While channel surfing last night, I came across Young Guns on WGN. Truthfully, there's nothing about this movie that's even remotely similar to Firefly, aside from the Western genre. But during a confrontation on the road between the "Regulators" and the outlaws they were after, I was suddenly taken back to Jayne and Mal on the wagon in Our Mrs. Reynolds. I fully expected at any moment for Mal, Jayne and Zoe to show up. Why? I don't know. The outlaws deserved to get hauled in and the Regulators were doing the job they were supposed to. It just seemed like they should be there. 24 November 2003 A sportscaster on the news this morning filtered through my pre-coffee fog with the words "not so much" and I found myself wondering if he actually picked it up from Firefly (or any Whedon production for that matter) or from general pop culture use. Inquiring minds...

It seems my log entries have been about death as of late. Not exactly a good start. Though, Death must be enjoying himself in Sci-Fi Hollywood. Read today that Jonathan Brandis just passed away at 27. Remember him? He played boy genius Lucas Wolenczek on SeaQuest DSV.

11:00 am mountain time Uggh....I have to take the dog to the vet in a few hours. She's got a fat lip and I'm sure it isn't anything serious but I always get this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, like I'm either going to pass out or throw-up when we walk in the office. I had to put my dog I'd had for fourteen years to sleep about two years ago and I don't think I'll ever get over that. Since then walking into the vet's office is a major challenge. I think there really isn't enough air in those offices and like space, I'm afraid I'll start screaming and no one will be able to hear me. But before the vet's office....beer making!! That's right yours truly has the hops, the yeast, the malt and a bunch of other stuff I don't know what to do with yet! So onward browncoats to yeasty bliss! 6:15 pm Good dog news! Just a small staff infection on her lip! Antibiotics for 10 days then we're done. Better yet, I didn't get sick, pass out or start to cry at the vet. More good news! Beer has been made! Five gallons sit fermenting in my closet as I type. It all came together nicely and I'm actually seeing little bubbles which means the yeast hasn't fallen victim to a mistake in time or temperature. I'm off to do some online shopping and watch Joan of Arcadia...Have a wonderful friday night fellow browncoats.

8:25 am So I'm sitting here this morning wondering about faith. Especially about Book's "You don't fix faith. Faith fixes you." The thing that has always bothered me about the idea and practice of faith is it so often requires you to do nothing. It seems like faith based on inaction is pointless. Let me be more specific, faith in God or a higher power seems pointless if that belief requires you to not act and just passively accept. Faith in yourself, faith in your friends and family that seems like a better bet. Faith in those folks seems to require action and interaction which results in something you can touch and feel. It's also immediate not like rewards that might exist once we get kicked into that engine. I know faith is sometimes defined as believing in things that are "unseen." To me it seems like there is unseen and then there is unbelievable. I'll take here and now, worrying about death and what does or does not follow is a waste of energy. Mal once said, "We all die alone." We do die alone but I think it's more important that we lived together. Onward to morning caffeine and hopefully a less pensive outlook! Be well fellow browncoats!

did you know that in order to find catalogues of medieval manuscrips, one has to look in...other catalogues? That's right, you look in a library listing to find a book full of listings of listings. The inanity is endless. Makes me want to fly about the fringes of the settled universe in search of semi-legal employment. On other sci-fi notes, finally went to see Revolutions last night. It just might be one of those movies that falls into the 'so bad its good' category. Right up there with 'Attack of the Killer Tomatos.' The symbolism was so blatant it came out to smack me in the face. Ah, the chistological allusions, the blindness briging true sight, all that damn believeing. (If one more person uttered the line 'I believe' I'm pretty sure Tinkerbell would have popped up on screen.) Oh, the glorious awfulness! I revel in it. Well, that's enough time-wasting for now. 11:47am So I'm wondering if it would be possible to skip the upcoming holiday season? You know, spend a month or so out in the black or preferably lying on a beach with scantily clad servers bringing me liquid refreshment. The only way I think I could get away with this is to fake my own death. Of course, when I show up sometime in Spring I'd have a lot of explaining to do. Domestic divia I am not but it seems somewhere along the line we got more focused on how things look than how they feel at the holidays. May all your days be bright.

Here comes Monday, sittin' on my face. Shit. It's Sunday night and the time is creeping along and Monday is coming to sit on my face.

8:22 pm I’m in a much better mood today. I’ve completed my TAP (tactical assault plan) for the upcoming holiday. I’ve got the majority of the ingredients on hand and I’ve figured out what has to be made when so the holiday meal can end up on the table in the late afternoon. I really like Thanksgiving, I mean what other holiday is there where the main focus is food? Christmas has presents, Easter, Valentine’s Day and Halloween have candy. I guess you could argue that the Fourth of July is a food holiday with all the barbequing going on but I think it’s basically a beer holiday. Speaking of beer, the beer we’ve been making is almost to the bottling stage. It has to rest overnight in its bottling bucket and then into the brown bottles it goes! I’ll be glad to have the 5 gallon drum off my counter. I need the space. Two grandmothers disagree killed me. Tash and Maniac have great grandmothers. I don’t think either of mine would have sat down to watch sci-fi with me. Also Gaines is either a genius or a madman. I wish I could have gotten my master’s committee to let me do a project like that. Imagine getting to watch Firefly and write about it and get graduate credit. That is just too sweet. I hope you all have a nice holiday and that someone who cares about you feeds you! ________________________________________ And I can tell by the way you're searching For something you can't even name That you haven't been able to come to the table Simply glad that you came And when you feel like this try to imagine That we're all like frail boats on the sea Just scanning the night for that great guiding light Announcing the jubilee And I can tell by the way you're standing With your eyes filling with tears That it's habit alone keeps you turning for home Even though your home is right here Where the people who love you are gathered Under the wise wishing tree May we all be considered then straight on delivered Down to the jubilee Cause the people who love you are waiting And they'll wait just as long as need be When we look back and say those were halcyon days We're talking 'bout jubilee

I'm here just haning out, wondering how to get money. I am waiting for December 9th, so I can at least see the DVDs in person. Ah, well, it's a good wait. Well, it is late (for me), so I will write more later. Yeah. Keep flyin'!

Well, I'm sitting in bed, just thinking. Then I took a random path and wondered...Why do beautifully well done shows, i.e. Firefly, get kicked off the air, while poorly done shows, i.e. essentially any reality show, stay on the air? I mean, the only reason it was kicked off, is because it was on a Friday. A lot of people aren't even home! How gyped is that?! If they moved it to, say, Tuesday, you might have more viewers. Well, that could be just me. Maybe, for once, I'm not the only one thinking this. Keep on flyin'!

11:14 am Hey All, I'm taking a short break from cooking to check in. I've still got mashed potatoes to make and then I’m pretty much done for the day. I’ve had this really dry hacking cough for a couple weeks now. I get this same cough every year at this time and my doctor (who I like very much, it’s the insurance company BlueCross/BlueShield that I hate, but I digress) thinks it’s an asthma related bronchial condition (how’s that for covering all the bases!) So a new inhaler for the holidays. This stuff is intense, it’s listed side effects are tremors, (translated your hands are shaking so badly you can’t hold a paperback book) paranoia, (what if the government is reading my blog and I get shipped off to a camp for non-patriots) extreme restless or sleeplessness,(damn I wish my Firefly DVD’s were here so I’d have something to watch, since I’m up.) All that being said I’m a big fan of breathing, love the breathing, really can’t get enough of it. All these symptoms are supposed to be clearing up in a few days but until then I feel pretty weird. Hey, sorry about the long posting line on my last blog entry. I tried to edit it but wasn’t able to go back. Be well browncoats!

I found out about a Browncoat Ball (on this site) in Chicago. I would like to go, but I would most likely in school. Gorram. And again, gorram. Tanj. It sounds really cool, and they have quite funny invitations. If you go, hope you have a wonderful time. In a few days, weeks, or whatever. Keep flyin', they can't take the sky from us! (If you would like to know more go to www.browncoatball.com, and, no, I don't maintain the site).

This here is a trial run of this here boggy-ma-thing. If this had been an actual blog it would have contained content worth reading. Or not. So here I sit awaiting the 9th of December, a date that has become more important to me than all it's surrounding holidays - even the ones I celebrate. Is that pathetic or what? Oh well. I am eagerly awaiting the Firefly DVD's and the end of my self imposed torment. I have not yet watched the three unaired (in the US) episodes. I have done my best to avoid scripts, threads, chats, downloads, emails, et al related to them. At first it was simply a form of expressing my steadfast belief that either the series would be picked up and I would see them on TV, and/or the DVD's would be released and I would have 'new' episodes to look forward to. After the DVD's were announced it was easier to wait, knowing I would have a shiny December watching them. But the countdown has been excruciating! There have been small, fun moments to ease my pain along the way. Few joys in a mom's life can compare to watching your 9 year old play with toy dinosaurs and have the dino's discussion include, "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "This Land." or hearing your 7 year old swear by his pretty floral bonnet. With Shiny fanfic, talented fan art, wonderful treads, and the IRC, I just might survive the next 9 days.

3:08 pm I really, really don’t! So this morning I’m thinking I’ll start the day with a little caffeine, a little fanfic, you know get the Sunday off to a nice slow start. Not even close to what happened. The dog got sick, of course, all over the carpet and the Christmas tree skirt. So my morning consisted of carpet and tree skirt cleaning. Which brings me to my next point. I don’t want to be a grownup! How did I turn into this carpet cleaning, food buying, job having grownup? I suppose the need to have food and a clean carpet has something to do with it but geessh! What I’d really like to do is just blow off the responsibilities and say, “Sorry, folks but me and the browncoats are going out to the black….back at some point. Don’t leave the light on.” I can’t imagine Zoe worrying about the carpet being clean. Inara maybe, but not Zoe. I think that is one of the most appealing features about Firefly, it’s what people will do when all the extras are stripped away. When life is about survival. It certainly seems a lot simpler, harder but easier in some respects. “Are we still alive, moderately fed and housed? Good see you tomorrow.” On another note, it’s my sister’s 25th birthday and here I am two states away and don’t get to see her. Bummer! Siblings are soooo cute at this age. All full of hope and ambition. Be well all! _____________________________________________ I will go down with this ship…. There will be no white flag above my door
