I first found out about Firefly this weekend at a friends house. And MAN this is what the original Star Trek should have been like. And its believable humans screwing up earth enough to have to leave her. Needs a little work on explaining mechanical things but with 1 season LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID. I am now more Brown Coat than Trekie

Welp!

I've been rather quiet for the past few days.. because i've been trapped on the verge of exhaustion.. simply put.. i've bought firefly... and now not only am i addicted but so is my spousal unit. Now that might not sound so bad BUT i have to be at work at 5am.. which means i get up at 3:15am. He works later than i do.. and now each evening he puts on firefly.. and i can't just go to SLEEP!! while it's on.. i always get hooked and start watching.. and each night i end up going to sleep around 10-11pm. which doesn't sound so late but when i have to get up 4 or 5 hours later.. every night.. i am SO tired.. and it's currently 7:30pm and.. guess what, firefly is on. Looks like another late night. In addition to watching every episode a few times.. i've also been working on learning the chinese ...

Flying High - Hooked on this song!!!
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 03:08:56

I am absolutely in love with Flying High by Jem... had never heard it until I watched Wiccanslyr's Mal/Inara vid, and I have been in love with it since (go watch the vid if you haven't seen it, btw, it's soooo nice). Now, I've got the guitar tab so I can learn to play this song, only, I have a really hard time hitting the highest note during the chorus when I try to sing it, which is so frustrating ;o) I'll have to try to harmonize it I guess... Anyway, it's a lovely song... I'm totally head over heels for it... So I guess this is a shout out to Wiccanslyr to say thanks for makin' that vid with this song... you rock!

Virtual Seasons and other common fanfiction related things
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 04:47:21

Well, I'm working on an essay for one of the topics I posted in my first blog (oh, and if anyone asks, no, these are not for school. The last community I joined, I wrote essays and posted them on the forum, then got chewed out because they sounded like assignments. So, just to make it clear, it's just that I'm a boring writer, not that I writer for teachers), but I thought I'd post a shorter piece about my thoughts on fan fiction in general, and the two virtual season projects in specific, and my favorite fanfiction writer in very specific. First to say, I love the idea of many people collaborating to create extended and lasting additions to the 'verse, canonical or no (and having been part of no less than three fanfiction writing communities, though never having written myself, I know that canon is a tricky issue). As far as I know, there are two attempts to accomplish this: Firefly - The Virtual Seasons, and Virtual Firefly. Both have merit, and both are impressive. "Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm" Thus reads the tagline for The Virtual Seasons. Though I believe it's the newer of the two efforts, I found it first at Firefly Talk (yay!). It just got a review from The Signal, which is what actually prompted this blog thingy. Though the output is impressive, and their artwork stunning (I especially loved the parallel Simons in the teaser for the first episode, Angel Echoes), I'd have to say that my enthusiasm for this project has waned a bit. The episodes are well planned, and I really appreciated the goal of connecting the series to the film, but I feel the writing quality isn't the highest I've ever read in the fanfic world (which can be seen in their tagline, actually. Though the concept is nice, based on the last lines of the film, "but peace amid the storm" adds unnecessary parallels in a phrase too short to bear the weight of such a structure. It breaks the flow, makeing the line feel clunky and static. Can I write a better one? Not sure, but I think "Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace in its midst" sounds better to me). Also, this is something of a preferance thing, but the directions the producers are taking the sereis is darker and more unpleasent than I enjoy. Not to say that I dislike dark, but there is a limit. Examples of this are found in the second episode, Heart and Sole, which has major "sly" elements for no apparent reason. Other such things are Mal's drugged statement to Inara in the most recent episode "Mixed Nuts" (which has a great premise, by the way, and some wonderful heroic Simon) that he has no problem with her job, just with her having that job. Now, this may be so, but it's strictly speculative, and the way the statement is included in an offhand manner with no reference to the issues involved (see Shindig or Heart of Gold) is frustrating. A minor detail which has added to my problems is the way the writers seem to be a bit fast and loose inventing details - in five episodes, we've met Inara's mother and Kaylee's family (but more on the Kaylee's family thing later)[Oh, and sorry for all the paranthetical comments, I just don't know where to put all these things]{Sorry for using "thing" so much too}. New Zoe/Wash video
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 09:28:59

My wife requested "a Zoe/Wash vid to 'Straight To You' by Nick Cave." Two weeks, ten migranes, and one new music video software program later, it's done. And angsty. Enjoy. Oh, thar be movie spoilers here, obviously.

Still a Crybaby ;p

Yup, I must be a glutton for punishment or something. Another two nights off, and on my last night I decided "oh what the frell, it's 3:00am and nothing's on the TV, why don't I put in Serenity again?" It's turning into like a weekly ritual now. I keep saying I'm not going to see it until I've rewatched the series in order again, but then every week... in goes the DVD ;p Sure, I prefer the series for the usual reasons, and I've a couple minor gripes with the movie in some places (not really Joss's fault, really, just the normal problems I'd imagine you'd have trying to translate so much story into under two hours.) Anyways, this is like the fifth or sixth time I've seen the BDM, and that last half hour still gets me every time. I won't go into spoilers, but man... weep fest ;p (Then I go online, and think I'll dig up some fan videos, and of course the first two I go to are 'Leaf on the Wind' and 'A Tiny Grief Song'... so there went the waterworks again... :) Almost have my lunchbox done. Most of the inks are finished-ish, and had to scrap a couple things and start from scratch, but so it goes ;p Still a little rusty with my inking, and normally I'd let it go, but it was Kaylee's sweet little smile I'd screwed up and I just couldn't let that go ;) (But at least I've been able to hold myself back and not turn it into the Kaylee lunchbox it almost was... that's for the next one I suppose :) Hopefully I'll have something to put up sometime next week. I've got my transfer paper and other supplies, so I'm tentatively going to try my first transfer today, and do some experimenting; see if I need to change anything, etc. Thanks to all for the positive comments I've gotten from my posts in the Blue Sun Room, and help with looking for screencaps: most helpful ;p :stupid:

Thanks

Thanks for the comments, everybody. I'm really enjoying writing this, and chapter five will be coming very shortly for Episode 2. I don't know how many episodes I'm going to write, but plan on a whole imaginary second season (ending with a second movie). Hey, I don't have much of a life

Another appology
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:48:22

I'm sorry my story is lagging, but Chapter 2 just refuses to be written as an entity unto itself. I've tried convincing it that all the cool chapters are out being written but NOOOO...stupid uncooporative Chapter 2. Don't worry, it'll get written, weather it likes it or not. HA!

No More Blue Gloves
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:00:41

Yep. We finally ran out of blue gloves where I work. Instead we have teal. Not so much fun now. Can't way the rhyme any more. Oh well. Now must find something else at work to ease my troubled mind. HA! In my mind are some ideas for fics. But I am not sure if I dare tread out into that vast land. It is a fertile land with many shiny writers and I would hate to suffer the slings and arrows of outraged reader. HHHMMMM...maybe I will finally learn to play with Photoshop instead. Yes. That is more than likely the most prudent idea. And who knows. I may have to eventually write up an idear in my head. I am sorry, but Jayne has done something to my brain. It is so totally warped. The captain makes me think pure and wonderful thoughts of love and such...but Jayne just makes me lust. And lust is really a great motivator right now. I'll be in my bunk. Rae

Hooray for Hollywood Video!
Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:38:51

I was at my local video store today, and I noticed that they FINALLY have the Firefly boxset for rental. I'm just so proud of them. No, they didn't have it when I needed, but now it is there to entice future Browncoats to the 'verse. I know this is random but it just made me smile, plus it made up for the girl at the counter being a complete dullard, but that's another story
