I'm not sure it's the same thing, with the Mal-less Firefly scenario I mean.
I think FF was about the ensemble more than anything, and though Mal is an important part of the dynamic I don't think it would kill the Big Damn Heroes.
Whereas in Doctor Who much of the focus is on... well, you know. 
Which is why the news of Eccy's early departure worries me a tad. How will the audience react at having to make such an adjustment so soon?
For the record, I could have sworn Paul McGann's VO in the TV movie stated a Time Lord has thirteen "lives"...
