I think he would've made major changes to the show around season 3 or 4, just like Buffy. Maybe he'd have spun off a character, or even made a prequel series (I'd LOVE to see what the war was like, and what Jayne was up to prior to our favorite show.

This is what happened in the Star Trek universe, and almost forty years later there are still folks who watch/love/obsess over each of its franchises.

In the main its because British TV doesn't generally contract its players in for any period of time - and a fair number of them end up moving on (witness Spooks/MI5 which undergoes an almost entire re-jig of the cast as the initial members go off to seek out Hollywood or American TV).

Its both a strength and a weakness of British TV - they are spending a long time on the new episodes of Doctor Who, but the production schedule is nothing like as tight as a US show - I'm not sure that aside from soaps, many or any UK shows operate on essentially a one week/one episode format.
