Attention Browncoats! Be warned. I got an email last night that showed the sender as Haken. I was immediately suspicious as Haken has never emailed me, that and the subject looked very much like something he would not say:

Hey, dude, it's me ^_^ :P

Now I don't profess to know Haken all that well, or really even at all, but that does not look like something he would type. I scanned the email and got this warning:

Virus"W32.Beagleatmm!zip" found.
You can not download this attachment.

Looks like a virus is being sent around using emails found on this site. BE WARNED!

Since I'm running Linux I probably won't be affected, but thanks for the heads up! That's what I appreciate about this site- we look out for each other.

BC1, have you ever emailed Haken? It seems likely that Haken's email address came from your own address book.

It would be pretty scary if someone or something has compromised Haken's security and is stripping the login email addresses of all the FFF members.

Did anyone besides BrownCoat1 receive this virus?

I'm pretty sure it's not coming from me. What does the email header say? Chances are it's probably coming from your own address book like Succatash said. Alot of SPAM are sent that way.

The header said:

I was automatically suspicious as this seemed a bit too familiar since we have never really had an opportunity to speak via email.

I have never emailed you, nor do I have your email in my address book. I suppose it is possible that someone who has both our email addys in their address book could have sent it.

The way a lot of viruses work is they infect one computer, get as many e-mail addresses from it as possible, then send out copies of the virus to all those addresses, pretending to come from another address on the list.

So in this case, there's probably someone who's either e-mail you and haken or has browsed to a webpages with both your and haken's e-mail address and then been infect with a virus.

I do IT and this is one of the more frustrating problems, trying to explain that no, it's not our machine sending the virus, you're just being tricked into thinking that.

You don't still have that email with the full and complete header in it do you? Should be pretty easy to track it... at least to find out which server it was mailed from...
