Darla entered Angel's apartment in B1.07 'Angel' so I don't think his soul gives him any protection from vampires entering his place.

Of course she also found packets of human blood in his fridge in that episode.

I assume garlic works, the slayer is not likely to employ an ineffective method for very long. But I don't recall that we were ever shown how or why.
