I've had the total opposite experience. Most people I've talked to love to explain their tattoos and show them off. I certainly don't mind talking about mine -- although, being on my shoulder and me not a one for tank tops, not many see it to ask.

The best tattoo story yet (in my opinion) was a waitress who had the name "Kevin" with three angels and a yellow rose tattooed around her ankle. Kevin, it turned out, was her brother, who died with his three friends in a car wreck. The three angels were for his friends, and the yellow rose was for friendship. I felt a little bad for asking and said as much, but the woman smiled and said she actually likes explaining her tattoo, as it keeps her brother's memory alive. It was incredibly sweet, and I really admire her for it.
