Democrats Coddled Eric Swalwell for Years

By Jim Newell | April 18, 2026

1. Eric Swalwell -- A coddled career.

The downfall of former California Rep. Eric Swalwell has had the Surge thinking even more than usual about psychopathy. According to the many allegations released against him over the past week—a week that began with him both employed in Congress and in a decent position to become the next California governor—he has, at the very least, been catting around for a decade. The more explosive allegations accuse him of regular harassment, drugging of women, and sexual assault, including among staffers. (Swalwell has admitted to “mistakes in judgment” but denied the assault allegations.) What kind of person, then, thinks they will run for a promotion as substantial as governor of California and keep these secrets contained?

Perhaps someone who’s spent the formative years of his political career being coddled. Despite negligible legislative talent and—as we can say pretty definitively now—limited intelligence, Swalwell did unusually well for himself in the House. It wasn’t just how he made himself politics-famous as a regular presence on cable news. He had good committees. He had a plum seat on the Intelligence Committee and was a co-chair of the Steering Committee, which decides committee assignments for the caucus. He was appointed to be an impeachment manager in one of Donald Trump’s trials. He got these gigs because he had ingratiated himself with former Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who took care of her fellow Bay Area members. There were always intracaucus grumblings about her favoritism to him, and how he didn’t deserve any of it. But it didn’t seem to bother him, and he got quite used to coasting through politics. It worked until it didn’t.

2. Anna Paulina Luna and Teresa Leger Fernández
Taking out the trash, one (bipartisan pair) at a time.

Before Swalwell’s resignation, the allegations against him initially added him to a long list of high-profile cases sitting before the House Ethics Committee, where proceedings do not move at an expeditious pace. Democratic leaders, while calling for him to end his gubernatorial campaign, didn’t opine publicly about whether Swalwell should resign from the House. They were facing a similar dilemma that Republican leaders have been managing in the case of Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales, who had an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide: Yeah, they’ve got to go, but with the House so evenly divided between the two parties, every single vote matters to the balance of power.

It fell to Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Teresa Leger Fernández—a Republican and a Democrat, respectively—to push the two out as a pair. The two coordinated to threaten both men with forced expulsion votes if they didn’t resign by 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Once it became clear that both of those expulsion votes would likely succeed, the two men resigned in quick succession. A justice system in which individual members wield the axe against fellow members with the threat of forced expulsion votes is not ideal. But exceptions were invented for moments like this. This worked really well!

Try again.

Your only two answers are either to acknowledge that your stupid ass was wrong... again.

Or since you're so obviously incapable of ever doing that, just do like I told you and shut your stupid fucking face up for once in your goddamned miserable life.

Be Evil. Be a dick.

There is no mention in the definition of antichrist about being 'lovable-by-just-about-everyone'. Trump fits the dictionary's description perfectly. The Antichrist is defined in Christian theology as a figure or force that opposes Jesus Christ, expected to appear before the Second Coming to spread evil and deception. It represents a "man of lawlessness" or a deceptive political/religious adversary. Generally, it refers to a powerful, malevolent force opposing goodness or faith.

Hey Google, Will everybody love the Antichrist when he comes?

Quote:

According to biblical interpretation and apocalyptic literature, the Antichrist will not be universally loved, but he will be admired, followed, and worshipped by a vast majority of the world's population. He is described as a deceptive, charismatic figure who brings temporary peace and economic stability during a time of global crisis, causing the world to marvel at him.

The Hill: Eric Swalwell was knifed by the party that long sheltered him

y-complicity

Quote:

For years, the Democratic establishment appeared to have known enough about Eric Swalwell to worry, whisper and warn. But not enough, apparently, to do anything.

As people recount it now, allegations about his behavior toward women have long circulated among Hill staff, California Democrats, Alameda County political figures, and reporters — some dating back to 2013, when he was first elected to Congress — yet none of this ever materialized into actual consequences for the now-disgraced former lawmaker.

Swalwell cultivated allies in Congress and fashioned himself into a minor Democratic star, a darling moralist of the #MeToo era who was entrusted by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) with helping lead Donald Trump’s second impeachment in 2021. In 2016, Swalwell’s fellow Democrats crowned him the “Snapchat King of Congress,” a title meant to capture his ability to relate with young people. All the while, stories about his own conduct circulated widely enough that, by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) recent telling, “Every member in Congress [knew] not to let any young staffer get around Swalwell or Matt Gaetz.”

Last Friday, four women came forward with sexual assault allegations in what appeared to be a coordinated release. Within a day, his campaign went from a haze of rumor to an outright collapse. He suspended his bid for governor and on Monday resigned from Congress.

This looks very much like an act of intra-party political assassination, quite possibly abetted by primary rivals. Swalwell has denied wrongdoing, writing in his resignation letter he would fight the “allegation,” oddly in the singular, while his attorney dismissed the claims as a “political hit job.” But with the weight and number of allegations against him, together with the growing evidence that people had known of his depravity for years, the Democratic establishment cannot plausibly claim to have been blindsided.

Top Democrats are complicit in remaining quiet when their principles — the very same ones they demanded the American public accept wholesale at the height of #MeToo — demanded that they speak. They were willing to sit on credible allegations of abuse until it became politically expedient to sacrifice one of the Democratic Party’s loudest champions of “Believe All Women,” the moment those tactics served a political end.

In California’s jungle primary, party operatives had every reason to fear a scandal breaking only after Swalwell limped through June and emerged as the nominee. The cost to take him out early was low. His House seat was all but certain to remain in Democratic hands. Whoever made that call was no more morally righteous to the congressman himself.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), whom Swalwell once called his “best friend in the whole world,” first insisted he had no knowledge of the allegations. Then he conceded he had heard “rumors in Washington for many years” that Swalwell was a “flirty, social guy,” while claiming that personal closeness had clouded his judgment. He now calls Swalwell a “predator” who “lived a double life,” “lied to all of us,” and “manipulated” him. (Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) now says a woman is prepared to come forward with sexual assault allegations against Gallego.)

Pelosi, who spent years elevating Swalwell and vigorously defended him during the uproar over his ties to Christine Fang, the suspected Chinese intelligence operative, struck a similarly implausible note. Now, she claimed she had “no idea whatsoever.” The suggestion that Democrats had “turned a blind eye,” she insisted, was “absolutely not true.”

I’m not necessarily suggesting these party elites knew every sordid detail of Swalwell’s misconduct, but — even now, after the spectacle has unfolded, they incredibly persist in pretending to bear zero culpability for the arrangement that made it possible. Swalwell knew the party

A former Axios reporter says the outlet ignored her story about Swalwell

One of the problems in today’s political world is that it’s very difficult to rely on what media outlets churn out. To their credit, few affirmatively lie, although it’s always possible to make mistakes. However, many of them fail to report on newsworthy stories if those stories might harm their preferred candidate or issue. You can call it a lie by omission.

With Eric Swalwell having been swept off the political playing board, it’s coming out that—just as with Joe Biden’s dementia—everyone in the Democrat world knew what was going on. However, they kept quiet because it was politically expedient. Most recently, a former reporter for Axios, one of the new “trust us” media outlets, seemingly admits that she brought the story to Axios, which conveniently ignored it.

Another one bites the dust:

Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida resigned from Congress on Tuesday, moments before the House Ethics Committee was set to determine whether she should be sanctioned for allegations of theft and other misconduct.

Cherfilus-McCormick has been charged with stealing nearly $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds for her campaign and has pleaded not guilty. She was likely to be expelled from the House in the coming days if she had not resigned.
