It's too depressing to pick thru the rubble looking for competence and (relative) honesty.

I know I'm going to get pushback, but I think Xi and Putin deserve recognition for vastly improving living standards for most of their citizens. That means they must have wrung ENOUGH corruption out of the system to get wealth to flow more evenly.

Supposedly the poverty rate in India decreased under Modi too.
But looking at the numbers, improvements since he became PM (2014) are marginalcompared to previous improvements. So I don't know whether he deserves credit or blame.

IMHO corruption is the #1 enemy of development. And I don't mean envelopes of cash for favorable votes, I mean when wealth dominates the entire political structure, which is warped to service the elite while preying on everyone else.

Meanwhile, living standards in the USA have been declining for decades under both Republican and Democrat regimes. Living standards in UK have also been declining for decades, but crashed since its sanctioning of Russian oil and gas. Living standards across the EU are also crashing since the introduction of sanctions against Russian energy and the destruction of Nordstream II. So USA, UK, and EU leaders aren't as good as they could be.

Venezuela? Venezuela is under constant pressure from Western sanctions and regime change operations, but with those huge oil reserves I don't understand why Maduro hasn't set up alternate trade partners. I can't tell if Maduro is incompetent or corrupt.

There are a few good books on this (I recommend “The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking, and the New Gospel of Adoption” by Kathryn Joyce, if anyone is interested in the topic – it’s sort of fascinating). Christian “adoption” agencies being literal human trafficking rackets is one of the more extreme examples of charity organizations being a scam, but they’re all basically like this, including the environmentalist groups.

When you have national governments claiming that their purpose is organized international charity, that is really obviously a scam. We know it’s a scam because we can see all these people do is start wars and sanction countries into oblivion. “Foreign aid” is a bribe
