Trump is off the charts: The deepening radicalization of Donald J. Trump

In the immediate aftermath of Jan. 6, 2021, President Donald Trump stayed mostly silent, and when he finally delivered his farewell address to the nation, he disavowed the attack on the U.S. Capitol as something that “all Americans were horrified by” and “can never be tolerated.”

Now, as Trump seeks to return to the White House, he speaks of Jan. 6 as “a beautiful day.” He says there was no reason for police to shoot the rioter attempting to break into the House chamber, and he denies there was any danger to his vice president, Mike Pence, who was hiding from a pro-Trump mob chanting for him to be hanged. He has promised to pardon many rioters if he becomes president again.

On this and a host of subjects, Trump’s positions have become even more extreme, his tone more confrontational, his accounts less tethered to reality, according to a review of Trump’s speeches and interviews with former aides. Where he was at times ambiguous or equivocal, he’s now brazenly defiant.

Embracing extreme positions is nothing new for Trump: Since launching his 2016 campaign by calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” and then pledging to ban Muslims from entering the country, he has promoted divisive policies, made inflammatory comments and prompted constitutional showdowns with Congress and the courts. But a return to the White House, in Trump’s own articulation, would be his chance to take revenge on his political opponents and push even further on his most polarizing programs.

The hardening of Trump’s stances comes as he has been operating for more than two years without the official apparatus of the White House, putting fewer gatekeepers and layers of review between him and the public. It also follows a long list of grievances he has accumulated from his eight years in politics.

To experts who have reviewed his proposals, Trump is sketching out the contours of a second term potentially more chaotic than his first. Critics across the political spectrum have voiced alarm at his increasingly menacing rhetoric. But Trump’s most loyal supporters have relished his combative speeches and followed him in espousing harsher stances.

“I was a Democrat before,” said Greg Bouchicas, a construction business owner from Plaistow, N.H., who came to hear Trump speak in Manchester last month, which he said was his first political event ever. “The fake FISA warrant on Trump tried to take the election from him and failed,” he said, referring to the court-approved surveillance of some of Trump associates’ contacts with Russians in 2016. Bouchicas raised his arms and extended two fingers on both hands when Trump spoke about rebuilding the economy.

In the storyline Trump presents, he is always the victim, but so are his supporters: The shared experience of suffering through conflicts brings them closer and strengthens their bond, according to Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian at New York University and the author of “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.”

“When authoritarian leaders lose office, they come back, like, 10 times worse — they never get less extreme, they always get more extreme,” Ben-Ghiat said. “January 6 was a profoundly radicalizing event for the base, for the GOP and for Trump himself, because even assaulting the Capitol you could get away with. His campaign events have to be seen as that of an extremist radicalizing people and emotionally reeducating people to hate people.”

At a rally in Waco, Tex., this year, Trump sought to discredit criminal investigations and the indictment he faces, disparaging them without evidence as examples of “prosecutorial misconduct,” and added, “when they go after me, they’re going after you.” Later in the speech, he repeated a refrain that has become a standard line at his rallies: “Together, we are taking on some of the most menacing forces and vicious opponents our people have ever seen, some of them from within. produce a Rose Tico and every gay and/or minority character from the Eternals movie. Spider Man
and Iron Man aren't making it to the landfill, btw.

Disney seems to have a new brawl happening at one of their American theme parks every week.

Disney has lost their "family friendly" and "kid safe" expectations. Teachers have been getting fired
for showing kids movies like Strange World and they're now sending kids home with permission
slips to see Disney movies in school to cover their asses.

Except for Guardians of the Galaxy which is doing moderately OK for a Marvel flick, and White Men
Can't Panther last year, they've put out one losing movie after another for going on 2 years now
(I'm not counting the few winners put out by FOX Studios, who Disney is rewarding by downsizing,
and SONY pictures).

Indiana Jones 5 is already hated by critics and is going to be the woke disaster that everybody
was predicting that it would be.

Disney's last two live remakes went straight to Disney+ because they knew they'd bomb in the
theaters. They're stuck putting The Little Mermaid in theaters because of their identity
politics and they hyped it up so much and already sunk more money into marketing it than it
cost to make.

Let's see what happens this weekend.


My recommendation to Disney, if they're really pro-business, is to start ACTING like a business
and stop acting like a band of coffee house baristas from Seattle.


And fire Kathleen Kennedy already.

And then fire whoever Kennedy had blackmail material on because there's no other way that woman
should have a job at Disney doing anything but getting somebody coffee.

To be clear, I am writing this as a pollster, not as a politician or partisan.

Here’s the bottom line. As it gets closer to the summer of 2023, I would rate the Democrats as more likely to again take/keep the White House. They might even hold on to the Senate and re-take the House.

This is a tough message to deliver to the Republican faithful at a time when inflation is way up, millions have crossed the border illegally, China and Russia both pose true threats to international stability, and crime has spiraled in many areas of the nation.

Sure, events and issues would seemingly favor the 2024 Republican nominee for president. But consider this. On Oct. 25, 2022, immediately following a Wall Street Journal poll showing Republicans up by two points in the “Generic ballot” midterm contest, my firm, InsiderAdvantage, also showed Republicans leading Democrats by four points, well within the WSJ poll’s margin of error. Sixteen national polls followed ours in the RealClearPolitics average with only two of the polls showing Democrats leading and one showed a tie. The other 13 polls had Republicans ahead. CNN had the same four-point advantage our survey showed. ABC News/Washington Post along with CBS News had the GOP with a two-point lead. NPR had it at a three-point GOP lead.

For whatever reason, only a few national pollsters chose to survey the battleground Senate contests in the last few weeks of the 2022 midterms. Many of us who did, such as one of the most accurate over the past four cycles, Robert Cahaly of Trafalgar, showed Republican candidates in competitive states trending ahead, reflecting what the many national organizations were indicating in their generic ballot polls.

But the building “Red Wave” disappeared on Election Day. Sure, as pollsters we will be examining our data and weighting for the next cycle. But it may be that for Republicans, opinion surveys, whether suggesting a win or a loss, won’t matter. A loss is more likely regardless.

Why?

In part because there exists a not-so-subtle Democratic machine that goes far beyond politicians and now includes significant segments of corporations, media and “nonpartisan” governmental entities.

While Fox News remains the dominant cable news network, it cannot possibly serve to counterbalance the three broadcast news networks along with CNN and MSNBC. Even with Newsmax thrown into the mix, the “conservative” broadcast and online media, based on total viewership and readership, is overwhelmed day in and day out. Other than Rupert Murdoch, conservative-leaning financiers have either lacked the will or have been stymied at forming consortiums to purchase or challenge the “legacy” media.
