But an extreme set of MAGA Republicans in Congress have chosen to take us backwards.

That is what sanity in a President looks like. In contrast, a typical day when Trump was tweeting went something like this:
1. The true version of the United States is beset with invaders;
2. Real Americans can see this;
3. I (Trump) am uniquely qualified to stop this invasion;
4. The establishment and its agents are hindering me;
5. The U.S. is in mortal danger because of this.
Taken together over time, this formed an overall story structure summarized this way: “The establishment is stopping me from protecting you against invaders.”
The elements were flexible. “The establishment” could be anyone – Democrats, the NFL, a media outlet, a corporation, and even Vice President Mike Pence. “The invaders” were China, the coronavirus that first emerged there, people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, or Black Lives Matter protesters.
But the structure never changed: There was a danger to the nation, Trump was uniquely able to protect America and he was righteously supported by “real” Americans.

Most Americans see Trump's MAGA as a threat to democracy: Reuters/Ipsos poll
Sept 7 (Reuters) - Days after Democratic President Joe Biden gave a fiery speech attacking former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies as an extremist threat, a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Wednesday found a majority of Americans believe Trump's movement is undermining democracy.
Fifty-eight percent of respondents in the two-day poll - including one in four Republicans - said Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement is threatening America's democratic foundations.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 60% of Republicans don't think Trump's MAGA movement represents the majority of the party.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online in English throughout the United States, gathered responses from 1,003 adults, including 411 Democrats and 397 Republicans. It has a credibility interval - a measure of precision - of four percentage points.
