“What we are witnessing with Russian tanks is a design flaw,” said Sam Bendett, an adviser with the Russian Studies Program at the Center for a New American Security.
“Any successful hit quickly ignites the ammo causing a massive explosion, and the turret is literally blown off.”
The flaw means the tank’s crew – usually two men in the turret and a third driving – are sitting ducks, said Nicholas Drummond, a defense industry analyst specializing in land warfare and a former British Army officer.
“If you don’t get out within the first second, you’re toast.”
Experts say battlefield images show Russian tanks are suffering from a defect that Western militaries have known about for decades and refer to as the “jack-in-the-box effect.” Moscow, they say, should have seen the problem coming.
The problem relates to how the tanks’ ammunition is stored. Unlike modern Western tanks, Russian ones carry multiple shells within their turrets. This makes them highly vulnerable as even an indirect hit can start a chain reaction that explodes their entire ammunition store of up to 40 shells.
The resulting shockwave can be enough to blast the tank’s turret as high as a two-story building, as can be seen in a recent video on social media.

Quote:I've seen this in war, where you hit them just right and their head explodes, leaving no time for their heroic last words as in "Saving Private Ryan" or even gestures of solidarity with their platoon. It is very humane, uses only one round, but requires a skilled marksman who keeps score. They never know what hit them.

Quote:During World War II it was estimated that 45,000 rounds of small arms ammunition was fired to kill one enemy soldier. In Vietnam the American military establishment consumed an estimated 50,000 rounds of ammunition for every enemy. During the Civil War men would stand a mere 30 yards from the enemy firing their guns, sometimes for quite long periods of time. If a regiment fired, and shot to kill, an opening volley should have created about 480 casualties, instead they were experiencing only a casualty every couple of minutes or so. Very few solders were actually firing and shooting to kill or at least hit an enemy.

Most soldiers are terrible at the mechanics of aiming and don't have the guts to kill carefully and deliberately. Hitting a target becomes a random/lucky/accidental event for most soldiers. Same happens with Russian soldiers wasting ammo prodigiously. But Ukraine soldiers are aiming true before they fire because it is not a Steven Spielberg war/fantasy/movie for them. They care.

Here is an example of how to lose a war using the best equipment with almost perfect accuracy:
The Unseen Scars of Those Who Kill Via Remote Control
Capt. Kevin Larson was one of the best drone pilots in the U.S. Air Force. Yet as the job weighed on him and untold others, the military failed to recognize its full impact.
Once, in 2017, his father pressed him about his work, and Captain Larson described a mission in which the customer told him to track and kill a suspected Al Qaeda member. Then, he said, the customer told him to use the Reaper’s high-definition camera to follow the man’s body to the cemetery and kill everyone who attended the funeral.
“He never really talked about what he did — he couldn’t,” said his father, Harold Larson. “But he would say things like that, and it made you know it was bothering him. He said he was being forced to do things that went against his moral compass.” Nobody cares, which is why the USA lost.

They should have gotten pointers from Barack Obama. He's got the Guinness Book of World Records for most people killed via remote control.
And when you report on those kinds of things, your reward is federal prison, so it's no wonder that all we're left with the "reporting" that we deserve.
But it's a good thing that Biden* didn't correct Trump's mistake and wasted all of his pardons on people his laws put into prison for low level drug offenses instead of pardoning the hero whistleblowers that our government likes to imprison or kill.

Posts like this give me more insight into SECOND's sociopathy. Because he made a point of saying, more than once, that he didn't shoot indiscriminately like the other soldiers, he took careful aim. But this wasn't about saving lives, it was about saving bullets
Imagine taking careful aim at a human being and killing them with less emotion than shooting at a beer bottle.
That's SECOND.
I think SECOND discovered his sociopathy/psychopathy during the Vietnam war. He was GOOD at it. But rather than be horrified by what he discovered under his Jehovah's Witness shell, I think he's proud of it. The fault with most Americans (military included), in his humble opinion, is that they're not natural-born, efficient killers. SECOND would like to correct that.
