All 15 of Ukraine’s thermal power plants were damaged or destroyed in the campaign; the grid survived on imports and emergency repairs, with no buffer for next winter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was already preparing new strikes specifically targeting logistics and water supply. For once, Ukraine is hardening a target before the strikes begin.
Russia’s winter energy campaign failed. Now it is coming for Ukraine’s water. Ukraine is spending 278 billion hryvnias ($6.4 billion) to make sure that doesn’t work either—with 22.1 billion hryvnias ($509 million) already released to harden 576 priority objects, out of more than 3,000 that require protection nationwide, according to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba.
Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced the first-phase allocation on 9 April at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Uzhhorod, with 26 water supply and sewage resilience projects underway across 10 communities.

As Hungarians are heading to the polls on April 12, the prospect that the 16-year rule of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party might come to an end will have far-reaching consequences for Ukraine, Europe, and maybe the world.
A lot is at stake for Ukraine in this election. Orban has blocked a €90 billion EU loan for Kyiv, and used its veto power to prevent the EU from opening accession negotiations with Ukraine — and Moldova — for almost a year.
Facing down Fidesz, and mostly outperforming them in the polls, is the center-right Tisza party of Peter Magyar, around whom the opposition in Hungary has united. Magyar has promised to combat government corruption and reestablish working relations with the EU and NATO. . . .

The Ukrainians Stop Pretending

The Ukrainians have never had the benefit of magical thinking. They have had from the start an enemy that was determined to destroy them. That being said, they have had hope and unrealistic expectations at times, particularly of the USA, but also of some European partners. This was the week we can say all of that hope was publicly put aside. Ukraine started talking to the USA and Europe in a different language, and that alone is worth noting. . . .
President Zelensky, arguably for the first time, spoke honestly about how the US was acting in league with Russia. . . .
In the space of a few hours, Zelensky implied that the US was working for/with Russia on getting rid of sanctions on Russia, on trying to get Ukraine to give up the Donbas in exchange for meaningless security guarantees, and that Europe needed to start imagining a defense future that did not involve the USA.
This can only be seen as a pretty complete change in tone from Zelensky, casting the US no longer as a reliable and crucial partner for Ukraine’s future, but now as a deeply unreliable partner who seems to be colluding with Russia while threatening the security of all of Europe. . . .
It is rather shocking to see that 54% of Ukrainians at the end of 2024 believed Trump would be good for Ukraine. It's a sign of the massive deception operation (some witting and some unwitting) that was run by pro-Trump supporters to hide the fact that he was a tool of Putin. These voices are still out there peddling their wares, but they did vast damage, and the hope that Ukrainians had at that time attests to it.
We can only imagine what the figures for trust in Trump and the USA in Ukraine would be after the last few weeks, when Trump has bent over backwards to publicly help Russia, but they are probably worse.
In the past, this might have been devastating for Ukraine, but what we are seeing now is not a country that cannot handle the truth. I cannot understate how important this is as someone who has studied states at war for my entire career. One of the greatest problems they all face is when they, particularly their leadership, see the war not as it is, but as they desperately want it to be. There is massive pressure to turn your enemy into a caricature you believe you can control/defeat. My enemy is weak, will eventually collapse, will sue for peace, etc. Putin still seems to be inhabiting such a self-constructed world of hope. All I can say is that such hope often leads one to a miserable end in a bunker under a Berlin garden or on some nondescript Italian street.
It is a good thing that the Ukrainian people understand the truth, and the Ukrainian leadership is speaking the truth. It means that they are fighting the war as it is and not as they wish it to be.
Definitely the most important story of the week.

Seven new air defence towers installed around Putin's Valdai residence

Seven new towers equipped with Pantsir air defence systems were built around Russian leader Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai during March, bringing their total number there to 27.

Details: Based on an analysis of satellite images from Planet.com, the outlet reported that construction of the seven towers began simultaneously on 17 March, the same day Russia's Ministry of Defence reported shooting down four Ukrainian UAVs over Leningrad Oblast.
Some of the new towers have already been equipped with surface-to-air missile systems.
The outlet noted that air defence around the residence is arranged in two rings with different radii, similar to the defence system surrounding Moscow.

Alina Kabaeva’s two sons with Russian President Vladimir Putin are reportedly 10-year-old Ivan (born spring 2015) and 6-year-old Vladimir Jr. (born spring 2019). The children live highly secluded lives at hidden Russian estates, heavily shielded from the public eye.
Ivan Vladimirovich Putin (10 years old): Born in Lugano, Switzerland, in 2015, reports suggest he is the elder son.
Vladimir Jr. (6 years old): Born in Moscow in 2019.

Russians kill their own wounded captured soldiers during "ceasefire" in Donetsk Oblast – video

Ukraine's 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after King Danylo has reported that the Russians have killed three of their own wounded servicemen with FPV drones in Chasiv Yar. The servicemen had been captured by Ukraine's defence forces and been made to change into neutral clothing.
Details: The brigade noted that the injured servicemen were evacuating from forward positions in Chasiv Yar while the declared ceasefire was in place. They were moving from the line of contact towards the rear, unarmed, with signs of medical treatment having been administered, and carrying walking sticks, in accordance with the conventions and ceasefire conditions.
The Russians spotted the wounded soldiers and attacked them with FPV drones. All three were killed. However, the brigade stated, they turned out to be captured Russian servicemen.
Quote: "For the purposes of safely conducting a medical evacuation of personnel from its own units, the brigade command had decided that the Russian personnel who had been captured the previous day by fighters of the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade should change into neutral clothing, and a test evacuation would be conducted to check whether the enemy would keep its own promises."
Details: The brigade has disclosed the personal details of the three Russian troops who were killed by their own drones: Senior Sergeant Stanislav Zhuravlyov, Private Aleksandr Choshev and Junior Sergeant Andrei Zagrebin.

Investigation: Western companies miss deadline to exit Russia’s main drone production site
Western companies continue operating in Alabuga, a special economic zone in Russia that mass produces attack drones that strike Ukrainian civilians and are capable of reaching EU.

Under recent European Union sanctions, EU-linked companies had to leave the Alabuga Special Economics Zone (SEZ) by Jan. 25, 2026.
However, as the Kyiv Independent found, they remain in place even after the deadline.
This investigation reveals that one American and six European companies continue to operate alongside the mass production of Russia's long-range attack drones in 2026. In 2025, two additional European companies were operating there until the Kremlin seized control of their Russian subsidiaries.
Their Alabuga-based divisions paid over $34 million in taxes last year, contributing to Russia's military budget during its war against Ukraine.
Western companies offered only vague explanations when asked why they remained, even though sanctions circumvention is a crime.
The Kyiv Independent also found that the Russian management of at least one European company operating in the Alabuga SEZ openly supported the Russian military fighting against Ukraine.

It doesn’t make sense to have your enemy profiting from your economy to pay for its war against you.
Ukraine should sanction Russia more comprehensively, in line with what it expects of other countries. For example, Ukraine has supported consumer boycotts of Western businesses still doing business in Russia, and correctly criticized some of them as “International Sponsors of War,” but it didn’t block them from accessing its own consumers. Ukraine cannot expect the other Western countries to cut off Russia economically if it doesn’t do more of this itself.
Ban companies working with Russia from Ukraine. This would add pressure to get the remaining ones out of Russia.
Expropriate Russian-owned companies still in Ukraine. Enact laws that treat working for entities connected to Russia and helping to hide their ownership as severe crimes, including failing to report Russian ownership if the person has clear knowledge. Expropriate the companies discovered. It doesn’t make sense to have your enemy profiting from your economy to pay for its war against you.

Use Russia’s money against Russia
Get the famous $300 billion in Russian cash held across Western jurisdictions, the largest chunk at Euroclear in Belgium, to Ukraine, using the Ukraine Repatriation Loan solution, under which it would only be repayable to the West from future Russian war reparations.
Although this won’t directly damage Russia’s economy in the short term, since the funds are already frozen, it would obviously be a major boost for Ukraine’s economy and war funding. It is ironic that Europe spends money on the war but keeps the enemy’s money safe in Belgium due to technicalities.
