Good Low Budget and Independent Flicks

Got a good one for you guys. Especially if you like time loop movies.
Triangle (2009)
It's no Edge of Tomorrow, and unless I'm missing something it's not going to leave you with many questions at the end like a lot of time loop/time travel movies do, but for a $12 Million budget, I thought it was pretty excellent.
The "lesser" Hemsworth Liam was the only name I recognized from it, and I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've actually seen him in anything. Lead actress Melissa George and did a great job... and she was gorgeous. Australian actress, which is probably why we don't see too much of her here. Did a search on IMDB though and was surprised to see that I've seen her at least three times before. She did an episode of House. She was in 5 episodes of the TV show ROAR from 1997 starring Heath Leger even before he was in 10 Things I hate about you.
But the one that got me was Mulholland Drive. She played Camilla Rhodes. Not the Camilla Rhodes that got more screen time as played by Laura Harring who also played Rita, but the blonde glammed up version of Camilla Rhodes that only showed up early in the movie, if memory serves. No wonder I didn't realize that was her though. It was 12 years earlier and this was very much a different character. I can't even remember if she really had any lines in Mulholland Drive, actually. I don't know... been too many years since I've seen it.
She was also in 23 episodes of Alias, but I never watched that show.
As always, I recommend going in blind and not checking out the trailer first.

I should mention too, that this movie was made in a time when we kept the movies at a reasonable length. With credits included, the runtime was only 1 hour and 39 minutes.
This lead to what I would call nearly perfect pacing. Today they would have made this movie 2 1/2 hours long and filled us in with all the unnecessary backstory for all the characters that was not at all necessary to the plot.
I was thrilled that just about 15 minutes into the story we're already getting to the action, and I didn't have to sit through 45 minutes to an hour of douchey rich people gabbing away about douchey rich people bullshit on a yacht before we get to the meat of the story.

If so, I might have thought it similar to Virus. There were a few ghost ship films out around then, IIRC.
Melissa George is gorgeous. She also had a character arc on Good Wife, which I saw on reruns.
That role had similar feel to Alexandria Daddorio in Modern Family.
This was Liam's first year of films.
2009 also had Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk in Star Trek, and in Cabin In The Woods.

I mean, she's almost 50 now, so I hope she aged like a fine wine like Jennifer Conneley did. But I got 10 teeth left and I'm a only a few years younger, so what do I know.
I only know Alexandria Daddorio from a few episodes of It's Always Sunny, but talk about another stunner. Never watched Modern Family, or The Good Wife either. I did see that Melissa was in that though because I looked her up on IMDB while my old man was still here and mentioned some of the things I know I'd heard of and he said he never watched that show but he remembered that it was a pretty big deal when it was out.
Triangle was pretty damn good, and I would give it a solid recommendation to anybody who likes movies about time. I wouldn't call it a "Ghost Ship" movie though, but I really don't want to say much more because I like going into movies knowing as little as possible myself.
I'll have to see if there's a good movie called Square or Rectangle now. I know years back I recommended a movie called Circle, so maybe there's a good movie for all the shapes.

Pretty sure there are some pyramids released. I think Sphere was made into film. Cube films that I recall were not good. Don't recall if trapezoid was made into film. How about Star, curve, arc?

I was thinking more along the lines of 2D flicks.
Looks like there aren't going to be any winners with Squares, Rectangles or Pentagons though, unless you like romcoms, woke DEI trash movies, or bullshit about Ukraine/Russia.

I liked Willy's Wonderland. It wouldn't even be watchable without him in it, and the fact that he doesn't say a single word in the whole movie is a good gimmick for him.
The Color Purple was Okay. I didn't realize it was an H.P. Lovecraft movie until after my dad and I started watching it and when his name popped up I had to pause the movie and apologize ahead of time that it probably wasn't going to be very good. I'd say it's better than your average Lovecraft movie, but still not very good. Another movie that would have been terrible had Cage not been in it, but the movie itself was so crazy that it overshadowed Nic's crazy acting.
I can't even remember the name of the one where he was showing up in people's dreams now. That one had so much potential, but the last 15 minutes were terrible and the ending sucked hard.
And then there's The Surfer. God awful movie that nobody should ever watch.

I think me and the old man walked away from this one even more pissed off at the ending than we did The Surfer, only because as fucking weird as the entire thing was, it was at least intriguing right up until the end.
I don't hate this movie. I know that I'm missing something to be walking away from it without feeling like I have any of the answers. The Surfer made me feel stupid for wasting 90 minutes of my time and my old man's time. The more I think about Enemy, the more I feel stupid for not automatically getting it...
Minor "spoilers" ahead, although I don't think they really matter with a movie like this.
It's a VERY yellow movie. Something I commented on within the first couple of minutes. As much as The Matrix is a Green movie, Enemy is a Yellow movie. However there are several scenes in the movie that do not have this yellow filter applied to them. If I were to watch it again, that is something I would for sure be keeping track of, and figuring what was going different in those scenes compared to the rest of the movie.
Google search tells me that "Yellow in cinema can represent anxiety, madness, frenzy, action, vitality, and can be associated with disease, and is used in action scenes."
Heh... I'd say yellow was "Madness" for the people on the screen, and "Anxiety" for the people watching the screen.
Soundtrack I'm undecided on. Lots of low horns, and at some point I said it reminded me of the OLD Warner Bros. Bugs and Daffy cartoons when they'd use the horns to comedic effect. Many times in the film I was thinking we were just one or two beats away from this turning into a full blown Looney Tunes 40's-50's era cartoon. It never did turn to wacky though, and it probably was a good choice to help manipulate you into a sense of unease and anxiety while watching it. Did I mention this is a weird fucking movie? Oh... and spiders.
This is a movie that I really, really want to like, but I'm going to have to work at it if that's going to happen.
You've got to hand it to them to make something this weird with so few characters. Mullholand Drive and Donnie Darko had a lot of other characters to work off of, and so much more going on.
There are essentially 4 or 5 people in this movie depending on how you count them. And 2 of them have pretty small roles and the 3rd one's screen time is almost non-existent. Jake Gyllenhall is the main focus of the entire run time, and it feels as though the other characters were written in just to be an extension of him.
I know at one point I said "Alright... Can everybody just stop being so fucking weird?". And that was when I'd asked earlier in the movie if anybody in the movie was going to start acting like a human being.
The very rare instance you see an "extra" it's not people doing stuff in the background, but it is somebody who is actually going to interact with the main character(s) with a line or two. That dialogue is either going to be something that seems totally normal but entirely inconsequential on first viewing, or is going to be something so out of left field that I kept thinking "yeah. That's exactly what we needed now. Let's make this nonsense movie even more nonsensical. And the way that Jake takes either type of dialogue in stride with the same same muted and unfazed demeanor makes it all the weirder.
The only part of the movie I can think of where there is more than 2 people on screen at the same time is when Jake's college professor character is speaking in front of his class.
I do think that narcissism plays a very large part of this flick, and the viewer only being witness to any more than one other character in every scene would make a lot of sense here, since he was teaching a class, and it would be one ti
