It's estimated that SARS-CoV-2 develops an established mutation every 11 days.
There's probably 1,000 different variants of Covid-19 out there worldwide by now, if not a lot more.
But even though that is probably scarier to think about than only 3, you can't give them all scary names if there are thousands of them.

Virtually all mutations will be lethal. A few mutations will be neutral, for example the substitution of one 'hydrocarbon' amino acid for another. Extremely rare mutations will confer an advantage. It's not the total number of mutations that count, it's the number of mutations that'll significantly carry forward.
That said, the political correctness of naming the variants is silly.

Well the answer to my question is that yes, most people do believe that there are only three variants. Because most people are either stupid, or believe everything they hear, or both.
Do a little experiment and ask anybody you know how many Covid variants there are.
