If the Governor of South Dakota turns up positive I call it poetic justice. This woman threatened to take several bands of Dakota to court to get them to drop their check points for people wanting to cross through their reserves.

Trump spent the day yesterday exhorting state and local authorities to open their schools in the fall regardless of the circumstances, saying that he planned to apply a lot of pressure to get it done. He didn't offer any federal support for this demand, clearly not having even thought about the possible complications for teachers, administrators and families.

According to CNN's Daniel Dale, Trump said in an interview that there's a lot of time to figure it all out, apparently unaware that in many districts school would normally start in as little as six or seven weeks from now.

It's curious that someone who clearly doesn't care about education is so adamant about this subject, but the likeliest explanation is that he believes the only reason state and local officials are reluctant to reopen schools because they want to hurt him politically. In other words, even the issue of how to conduct the school year during a raging pandemic is all about him.

As Fred Trump Jr. lay dying of a cardiac condition the family waited a week before seeking medical help. Decades later, Mary Trump says she sees the dysfunction she witnessed as a young member of the Trump clan playing out on a national scale during the pandemic. Instead of acting swiftly to address Covid-19, the President has refused to take responsibility for early mistakes or to meaningfully adjust as things grew worse. Incapable of facing even a hint of failure, he has offered distractions and denials until he has seemed to lose interest. Recently the Washington Post reported that the White House may be hoping people just get used to the illness and death.

"While thousands of Americans die alone, Donald touts stock market gains," Mary Trump writes. "As my father lay dying alone, Donald went to the movies. If he can in any way profit from your death, he'll facilitate it, and then he'll ignore the fact that you died. ... The fact is that Donald is fundamentally incapable of acknowledging the suffering of others. Telling the stories of those we've lost would bore him."

Do countries with female leaders truly fare better with Covid-19?

“What do countries with the best coronavirus responses have in common? Women leaders” Forbes heralded on April 13, about a month after the first lockdown orders hit the US. “Countries led by women have fared better against coronavirus. Why?” The Hill puzzled just five days later.

The idea that female world leaders were outperforming male ones was based on several high-profile anecdotes. By early June, New Zealand, led by 39-year-old prime minister Jacinda Ardern, seemed to have rid its shores of the virus. Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen has been praised by others around the world for her strong response to the crisis, and for the low infection rate in her country. And in Germany, chancellor Angela Merkel’s Covid-19 response has won her high approval ratings.

But most of these reports don’t reference any data to support their narrative. A recently released study (pdf) finally tests the idea that women heads of state have excelled at handling the crisis. The research, conducted by two economists at UK universities, suggests this phenomenon is more than just anecdote.

Abstract

Since the start of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the relationship between national female leaders and their effectiveness in handling the COVID-crisis has received a lot of media attention. In this paper we scrutinise this association more systematically. We ask if there is a significant and systematic difference by gender of the national leader in the number of COVID-cases and deaths in the first quarter of the pandemic. We also examine differences in policy responses by male vs. female leaders as plausible explanations for the differences in outcomes. Using a constructed dataset for 194 countries, a variety of socio-demographic variables are used to match nearest neighbours. Our findings show that COVID-outcomes are systematically better in countries led by women and, to some extent, this may be explained by the proactive and coordinated policy responses adopted by them. We use insights from behavioural studies and leadership literature to speculate on the sources of these differences, as well as on their implications. Our hope is that this article will serve as a starting point to illuminate the discussion on the influence of national leaders in explaining the differences in country COVID-outcomes.
