Only one example of it comes up with the the word cult before extremist. It's for Jehovah's Witnesses, which they refer to in the article as a cult.
People don't use cult as an adjective for extremist like they do for movies.
The intention of this article was to imply that this guy was part of a cult, that just so happened to be an extremist cult.
