The man who opened fire on people at the Gilroe Garlic Festival in California was identified by the police as 19-year-old Santino William Legan. Shortly before the attack, a young man who called himself Iranian-Italian on social networks posted several photos from the festival on Instagram, accompanying them with cruel comments. Was he anti-American, was he just hateful or mentally ill ... the whole mass shooter thing seems a mystery at times.

The shooter’s other brother connects to the boxing scene, the shooters father and grandfatehr connect to politics and military. Witnesses told CBS San Francisco the gunman appeared to be firing at random. Ali Vahabzadeh (changed name to Allen Baylor) was an Iranian immigrant who became an Econ professor at UCLA.

According to the FBI, the gunman owned literature "from left to right" so that sources of information about his ideology "don't all align"

The shooting Sunday night on the final day of the annual charity event at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy left three dead, 12 injured and the suspected shooter, Legan, killed by police. Several others were injured in the chaos after shots were fired, but were not shot, authorities said.

This guy seems to have been fascinated with extremism itself. I don't think we're going to be able to pin a specific ideology on him, much as some would love to be able to box him into one and score points for their "team".

He used a weapon already banned by gun control laws and attacked in a gun free zone. The possession and sale of the weapon are banned in California

The media noted that, because the book contains racist and anti-Semitic content, it is popular in white supremacist and neo-Nazi circles. However, an FBI spokesman said no conclusions should be drawn regarding any motive or ideology based upon the book recommendation; he wanted to "knock down" any speculation about white nationalism. After two gruesome mass shootings in a 24-hour span, some Republicans are raising alarms that their opposition to new firearm limits is making the party toxic to the suburban women and college graduates who will shape the 2020 election.

“Republicans are headed for extinction in the suburbs if they don’t distance themselves from the NRA. The GOP needs to put forth solutions to help eradicate the gun violence epidemic,” said Dan Eberhart, a Republican donor and oil-and-gas executive who supports President Donald Trump.

“The GOP needs to make several moves such as universal background checks, eliminating loopholes and banning military-style assault weapons to neutralize the issue,” he said. “Otherwise, Republicans will lose suburban voters just like they did in the midterms on health care.”

I never gave a real thought to this statement or its implications in the OP.

Wishy is implying that I feel this idiot's name and face shouldn't be plastered all over the news day in and day out because I want to hide the fact that he is a white dude, or whatever she's going on about.

It's true. I've said quite a few times that when there is a shooting of any kind that they shouldn't give them any air time or say their name at all on the news. But not at all for whatever reasons Wishy's got floating round in that diseased brain of hers.


The UK has blocked giving out any of this info after an event for quite a long time and it seems to be met with great success in curbing the desire for others to follow suit.

Even before the final butcher's bill was presented for the Sunday-night mass shooting in Gilroy, the blue checkers and talking heads were filling their platforms with fairy tales that most mass shooters are white.

But in the two-week run-up to Gilroy, there were 36 other mass shootings from coast to coast — and 34 of those shooters were black. One was white and one Hispanic. These results echo a New York Times story from 2016 that stated, much to the surprise and chagrin of the reporters, that whenever there are three or more victims of gunfire, 75 percent of shooters in America are black.

Today, that number looks a bit generous to black sensibilities.

But numbers from the New York Times and ten stories from good ol' Colin this year documenting hundreds of black mass shootings did not do much to remove the blinders of those who insist mass shootings are a white thing.

"Here's a fact that republicans are too stupid to grasp," said Mark K (@MarkRK47) on Twitter. "Every mass shooting in the US is carried out by a white supremacist. Every. Single. One."

Sibel Edmonds (@SibelEdmonds) chimed in to at least admit the possibility that not all mass shooters are white: "One hard hitting fact: In the chronic USA mass shooting incidents, in 99+% of the cases, the perpetrators: White, Anglo-Saxon, Christian, Americans."

Salon, the Daily Beast, Mother Jones, and other staples of the mass media cannot spread these fairy tales fast enough. The facts tell a different story — the opposite story.
