I think the only thing that matters is if they tell a good story, and if you continue to watch or not.
I have no strong opinion about this either way, possibly because strict gender roles have always annoyed me. I suppose that I can empathize with maybe people feel like this takes a role model away from their gender, and that can be tough, but ultimately I think even the doctor feels more value in being human before anything else, in so much as someone from a different world and completely different biology can feel human. Therefore maybe it is all right storywise that the doctor is a hero for humans in general.
Besides, I doubt this will last long, considering the amount of backlash I see about this, whether warranted or not. So take heart in that.

Thor becoming a woman ( or what ever that Thorina was )
Doctor Who becoming a woman
James Bond rumored to being played by a black guy / and or a woman ...
It's a sad trend that goes well beyond just The Doctor.
Here's a character which I'm just learning about , via the MCU, and am genuinely looking forward to seeing - Black Panther. The very POINT of his character being black is tied into the place of his birth, and his people, in Africa.
Am I suppose to believe that Black Panther or Luke Cage would be just as celebrated and applauded if , say 10 years down the road, one of those characters is played by a cute, freckled face, red haired white girl ?
Because that's basically what we have happening here, but in reverse. Characters which have literally been in existence for decades ( The Doctor and 007 ) or even the actual historical figure Thor - for over 1000 years, the basis for the modern comic book / Marvel character, just suddenly, haphazardly switches gender, for no god damn reason?
Utter nonsense.

...and?
Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

And by their very nature they can change gender. Even though Thor is a male god, the Norse pantheon does have Hela, Sif and the Valkyries.
And yes that does bug me that someone would do that. But as I said he is a god.
Hela , Sif and the Valkyries aren't male, are they ? They are their own identities.
But you're missing the point. Thor is every bit as real as The Doctor or James Bond. They're CHARACTERS, made up , but are used as vehicles to tell stories about who WE are.
No one is remotely suggesting there can't be female superheros in the least, so this entire discussion is completely disjointed and nonsensical.
Above I have jokingly used the term ' character appropriation ', as the concept has been in the news over recent months. It's a ridiculous idea, to claim that ONLY Mexican cooks could cook Mexican food, or that ONLY groups of people can dress a certain way, because if anyone else does it, they're disrespecting or even " appropriating " a culture. Rubbish ! But in the case of Dr Who, we LITERALLY have a character who has always and only been male, even had romantic interactions w/ a companion ( 10 and Rose ) ... it completely betrays the essence of The Doctor's very being by suddenly changing him to a ' her '. Women and men are different. Down to their genetics.
I don't care how much I go against the tide of popular sentiment with this , because it's not ME making the case. It's science. And this nonsense of trying to promote a fad of gender swapping or what ever to appease a micro fraction of the fandom, never mind the population as a whole, is wholly misplaced. Gay relations, inter species relations... I know, Dr Who has touched on it. More than a time or two.
