It's obvious that you pride yourself on being a 'nice', 'concerned' and 'reasonable' person.
My question is - how do you maintain that self-image in the face of all the evidence that 'your side' has killed hundreds of thousands of people* and caused untold economic misery* for millions more?

I for one am happy I was wrong. Merkel is the big fish and getting her out of German politics is much more important than anything that happened in France. Now there will be no "look what is happening in France now" propoganda from her camp come election time, and anything bad that happens under Macron's watch will now be used against Merkel, especially when more immigrant problems happen.
Overall it's a good thing. Even though the hot-shot banker won, France is so sick of the status quo that they threw both of their leading parties under the bus. Le Pen is still young and she's not going anywhere.

That's certainly one possible outcome. But it doesn't look to be a certainty. Here's the potential problem I see with it.
Economically, Germany is net positive in the EU.

The German economy is doing just fine. And the country hasn't been hit with the largest number of immigrants due to open EU borders.
I think that means that - despite Merkel's obeisance to the US, which might rankle German pride a little - overall the Germans don't seem to be that unhappy with their situation. And I think that - as master of the World Bank and IMF - the US has bought German loyalty with all things NATO and EU. That's why, after being wire-tapped by the NSA, the German government merely pouted - very briefly - as a token of displeasure.
Basically, the US has made sure Germany will benefit economically as member of the EU through the actions of the World Bank and IMF, in return for political obedience. And Germans seem mostly OK with it.
