Time for new software.

A few yirz ago a forum I wuz in switched to sumthing called Xenforo. It wuz the best functioning forum ever, az if its creatorz had learned wut 'ergonomic' meanz and had sum talent at it; a very rare thing in the world uv software.

The admin for that forum (The Infinity Program*) sed it wuz only 150 buks and took 20 minits to chanje over from the previous software.

I know zilch about running a forum, so only have the perspectiv uv a customer. But its like owning a car - you dont need to be an enjineer to appreciate a fine vehicle or tell the difference between a Chrysler Imperial and a Chevette.

This place iznt totally bad, but its alwayz had its teknical difficultyz. And I hav the impression that therez alot uv patch up work involved in keeping it running. Time iz money! Time iz more than money, its your only truly unrecoverable resourse!

*The Infinity Program forum had no spesific subject. The owner did a big recruiting campaine back around 2005 and got several peeps from The Skeptic's Society Forum, including me. It must hav had at least 500 memberz at its peak, but dejenerated to just a few regularz by about 2012. My opinion - a small cadre uv bad applez chased everybody away. Guyz who did nothing but spew insults and a jeneral downer attitude. Trollz!

Since Haken built this site, line by line of code, all by himself, I'd not suggest he doesn't know what he's doing.

Thats interesting. I alwayz assumed it wuz sum standard purchased program.
Like I sed, its not horrible.

Another place that put their own forum together iz CR4. A good example uv wut I consider horrible.

I'll be the first to say that this site is old. I'm actually a lot better at building these things now than I did 10 or so years ago. If I had time, I could make it better. Maybe when the kids are older and I don't have to chauffeur them around as much. LOL.

What's really good about not using a bought program is that I can fix it if something breaks. It wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say that we've outlasted many forum vendors.

Time iz a big thing to consider before starting a project. An even bigger consideration iz enthuziazm.

Way back, I desided to make a motor from scrach. I wuz into RC carz and knew I coud make a better motor than anything on the market.

Turned out great, but it took 3 yirz and about 10,000$.

The main thing I learned from that project wuz that you hav a limted amount uv entuziazm. If you uze it all up before you finish, good chans the project will never get dun. I never made the car.

I woud hav had more fun just making a car with 4 100$ motorz (1 for each weel) and had all that time for other projects.
