In the garden, and RAIN!!!!

It says something about how neat you've kept your yard, and how your neighbors have gotten used to seeing you improving your home and helping them out by cleaning out the street gutters etc, that they notice when you don't, and they care enough to want to do something about it. I guess you're more popular with them than you realized, SIX.



I wonder if they would ever organize a neighborhood cookout? Our neighborhood ... well, a few neighbors, anyway ... used to do that once in a while. Maybe you should exchange phone numbers? I have the phone numbers of all of my immediate neighbors, and the phone numbers of several of my distant-sister's neighbors. That way, if I can't raise her by text or phone they can check in on her. It's kind of a safety feature. They look out for each other and I try to look out for her.

Yeah, pro landscapers do a fast job but they still charge an arm+leg for it. The company charges ...oh, I dunno ... $50-60/hr (judging by LA $) but the crew gets paid $15.

I made roast tri tip, roast potato and (garden) zucchini and (garden) pickled beets last night and, oh my, did the beef come out great again! So NEXT time, I'm just going to roast a whole big tri tip and I won't have to be so exacting about how much roast beef I dish out, and we can have roast beef sandwiches or maybe hash the next day. For some stupid reason, I just never oven-rosted chicken or beef before. I mean, literally never, for the 40+ years I've been the family cook. Pork and turkey and vegetables? Yep! But I was used to spit-grilled chicken and beef on the grill and I don't have a grill.

My first foray was standing rib-eye roast last Xmas which was exceptional but also very expensive and not to be repeated too often! I think if I hadn't tried to roast a tri tip in prep for a stuffed mushroom-flavored hash, I wouldn't have discovered roast beef for years, which led me to oven-roast a chicken as well. So now I have a repertoire of roasts that are easy to make as long as the weather isn't too hot. And roast trip tip is definitely going on the menu! Y'all are welcome to come for dinner!

Back from my walk and it is over 30C which is 90F.

Maybe.

It's funny you mention the sewers too. I had already cleaned them out twice this year preemptively before rains came down, so if anything the new neighbors who lived in the house of the guy who used to do it all the time before his back failed him didn't even know it was a problem yet.

So I'm wondering who did it over the weekend when I wasn't doing it? Those evil sycamore trees across the street have left their bark everywhere, and when I mowed my lawn I had a ton of them up on my grass on the corner like the old man used to do (which I've mentioned annoyed me to no end until I realized what a service he was doing the entire neighborhood when he silently passed that mantle on to me).

I don't think it was the new neighbors who did it since I noticed that they had a bunch up on their curb too. I'm thinking that the guy who called me was the one who did it this time. I don't think there's any chance the hillbillies further down the road who saw me do it a couple of times would have bothered.

I've exchanged numbers with a few of my neighbors. I really miss the retired couple across the street, but the new neighbors seem pretty great so far and keep up the lawn real nice. Young couple with kids.

When I first moved in they had some block parties, but even though I was invited I never attended. I probably would now if they had them, but it's been years. It's not like I'm super outgoing these days... I still like to keep most people at arm's length. But especially in these times it's not a bad idea to have a stronger sense of community.

Yeah. I'd have no desire to work for somebody else's company. I'd probably rather do a per-job cost model too, rather than an hourly thing. I don't like being rushed and I do a good job at whatever I do. The days of breaking my back to make anybody else rich are over. I have no desire to be rich, but I think having a little more structure and responsibility that I impose on myself doing something I enjoy doing could be a good thing for me.
