This timeline is intended as a guide to the events depicted in the television series Firefly (and its feature film continuation, Serenity), as well as the internal history described in that series and film. The format of the timeline is based more or less on that found in Star Trek Chronology: A History of the Future, by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda. Firefly is, of course, © 2002 Mutant Enemy Inc and 20th Century Fox Television, while Serenity is © 2005 Mutant Enemy Inc and Universal Pictures, and this timeline is in no way affiliated with any of those entities.
A variety of sources were used in constructing this timeline:
•The fourteen episodes of Firefly itself, naturally, along with the opening narrations included with those episodes as originally broadcast in North America.
•The feature film Serenity, just as naturally.
•The "R. Tam Sessions," a sequence of video clips released online (and included in the Serenity: Collector's Edition DVD) which depict scenes from River Tam's time at an Alliance-sponsored academy.
•"Those Left Behind," a Serenity tie-in comic book story written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews.
•"Better Days," a Serenity tie-in comic book story also written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews.
•"Float Out," a Serenity tie-in comic book story written by Patton Oswalt.
•"The Shepherd's Tale," a Serenity tie-in comic book story written by Joss Whedon and Zack Whedon.
•"Leaves on the Wind," a Serenity tie-in comic book story written by Zack Whedon.
•"No Power in the 'Verse," a Serenity tie-in comic book story written by Chris Roberson.
•"The Other Half," a Serenity tie-in comic book story (originally released on MySpace) written by Jim Krueger.
•"Downtime," a Serenity tie-in comic book story (originally released on the USA Today website) written by Zack Whedon.
•"It's Never Easy," a Serenity tie-in comic book story (originally released on Free Comic Book Day 2012) also written by Zack Whedon.
•"The Warrior and the Wind," a Serenity tie-in comic book story (originally released on Free Comic Book Day 2016) written by Chris Roberson.
•Deleted scenes and other features included in the video release of the series (both on DVD and Blu-Ray).
•Deleted scenes and other features included in the video release of the feature film (on DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray).

Under each entry, there is an explanation of how I arrived at the date in question. For simplicity, I have grouped many references to the past into periods of time rather than specific years, since admittedly, evidence from the filmed material itself is pretty scarce.
