I was never a super fan or anything. I can only name two of her songs that weren't on Sister Act. In honesty, one of them is on my playlist of about 1,200 songs. She had one hell of a voice.
Here's the part where I was going to say I don't give a shit about either of their personal lives since they said back in the 90's they didn't want white people buying their albums, but unless I were to find a video or audio where Hill specifically said that, the internet is telling me that was an urban legend. I guess Hill herself has many times come out and said that she never said anything like that, and it was a rumor that was started when a random caller on the Howard Stern show said that she said it in a Fugees interview on MTV. To this date apparently, no video/audio evidence has ever been provided to prove it. (This was right around the time that Oasis said they didn't want any Americans buying their albums too, and the Gallagher brothers aren't shy about admitting they did say that... and I have 3 of their songs on my playlist).
That being said, I'd never go out and buy a Lauren Hill album or go to a concert myself. Not just to hear the two songs I know and the one song I like. According to her own words, her music isn't made for me. She writes most of it for young black women.
And even the one I like would probably fall in that category too.
But ain't that the beauty of art? Don't matter who it was "made for". If it's really good, it can be enjoyed by everyone.
To put it another way, I just never really understood why Hollywood has this constant need to race swap and sex swap everything, as if the only way you can enjoy the movie is if you see yourself up there on screen.
Not when this is my favorite Lauren Hill song and I still hear it fairly regularly of my own volition more than 30 years after it came out.
