What does that mean? It's not clear to me.

Kiki, were the numbers you mentioned how many different WEAPONS are used in crimes or how may PEOPLE are killed by various types of weapons? Because if it's just how many weapons (which I assume it is?), one thing not being taken into account is which weapons are used to kill the most people...especially how many people at one time. I think that's a large part of the (okay, possibly visceral) thinking about assault weapons. When a large number of people are mowed down at one time, the reaction is understandable. As to gang violence, etc., that's something we've all lived with, and given it happens among a particular aspect of society, AND how difficult it would be to address in any viable manner, I think it has more to do with that than just "nobody in the middle class gives a rat's ass about that". I think they feel helpless to even imagine how to begin to deal with it, whereas prevention (or at least minimization) of mass killings can be come at from many directions. So could gang murders, certainly, and there's some truth to what you wrote, but I think it's not that simple.

Legislation, yes, given as far as I know there's only Feinstein's actual "bill". But the "thrust" is focused on far more than that. There are myriad aspects to Biden's group's recommendations, not just assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. For one thing, the BIGGEST push has been for background checks; Biden has made that his "top priority". He's also (rumor has it) proposing a law that could define gun trafficking as a federal crime. Part of his recommendations are funding for school security, greater screening and treatment for the mental health of gun buyers, a call for greater coordination between state and federal law enforcement officials, and a more comprehensive database of gun purchases and violence. I hate to see it done that way, but most likely they'd have the best outcome by doing it piecemeal, since I don't think ANYTHING with an assault-weapon or high-capacity magazine ban would get through Congress.

It's early yet, we don't know if anyone else will come up with legislation (since I think Feinstein's is dead on arrival) and/or what it might contain. We don't know what Obama might do by executive order. But from what he's said, Obama wants to come at it from numerous directions, it's not just about assault weapons, etc.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Here's my post, from two sources -

CHICO -- The gun law debate has made some gun enthusiasts anxious, but the major proposals by President Obama are laws already in place in California.
People are in a panic that their gun rights are going to be restricted, said Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey. However, not much is going to change here.
California, until a couple of weeks ago, had some of the toughest laws in the nation, he said. They mirror what the president wants to do.
Among Obama's proposed legislation is requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales, reinstating an assault weapons ban and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.

On Jan. 16, 2012, President Obama held a press conference to announce his plan for changing the face of gun control in this country. Among his suggested initiatives are universal background checks for gun sales, the reinstatement and strengthening of the assault weapons ban, limiting ammunition magazines to a 10-round capacity, providing schools with resource officers and counselors, putting more police officers on the streets, establishing stronger punishments for gun trafficking, and offering more comprehensive insurance coverage for mental health.

AFAIK the reason why the assault-weapons ban is further along is b/c we've had similar legislation in the past, requiring only a re-vamp rather than a complete original draft. Also, some things are being considered for the executive-order route rather than the legislative route.

Anyway, I have important things to attend to on a short timetable, I may or may not get back to this with more detail.

A significant amount more gun deaths, don't you think. 9000 odd compared with less than 2000 for knives, and a big proportion, firearms not stated, so we don't know what kind of gun.

Your argument doesn't hold up very well, as these figures support wider ranging laws on different types of guns would reduce gun deaths.

It also demonstrates how figures are misrepresented, and signiciant ommissions - such as the firearms -other being missing are used by gun advocates.

And also, I'll say it again - if assault weapons do less damage than non firearm weapons, then arm your military with butter knives and see how well that goes fighting the good fight.

Gene Rosen a/k/a Tom Sullivan at Dark Knight Massacre in Aurora Colorado

Old Gene Rosen was actually a Crisis Specialist with FEMA for children back in 2008, or he was playing one as an actor for some PR work, one of the two. The video shows you some images of him working with some kids that have an uncanny resemblance to some of the kids that Obama had onstage during his signing of his gun control related measures, recently. I have a feeling they’re not the same kids, since the ones seen with Mr Rosen would be 4 years older, and I don’t see that here. Anyway, check it out just the same before its gone:

BTW, the “psychologist” BS was exposed earlier. Gene Rosen only has 2 years of college from North Texas State, that aint enough to become a “Board Certified Psychologist.”
