IIRC, part of the plot of the book was dealing with a fuel shortage.

Ignore too much reality, and don't attract a fantasy audience to compensate, and you don't have enough viewers to sustain the show.

Like Joss says, it can move at the pace of plot.
So story is the only fuel needed.
