I know in the last several years since Firefly was cancelled, there has been discussion on many ways to re-vitalize the series by accepting donations from fans to get money so Joss could bring back Firefly in some form.....but there always seemed to be good reasons it couldn't be done. Now that this much time has passed, couldn't Joss start a PROJECT himself on KICKSTARTER much like others have done (bringing in three times what they set out to get). Joss could come up with donation perks and use grassroots means to create "something of his own" . Like Space Command, no studio involvement?

Given that Joss is the director of the highest grossing non-James Cameron film, I imagine if he wanted to get FIREFLY made, it would happen without the need to turn to something like Kickstarter. The fact that he has thus far chosen not to continue the story, to me, speaks more about Joss's current desires and state of mind than it does the possibility of funding.

The main reason this won't work is that FOX still owns the film rights to the property.

However, I disagree with Gwek that Joss has turned away from Firefly. He is probably being bombarded now by Disney execs anxious to get him signed for the Avengers sequel, plus other offers are likely to be pouring in. In spite of what a lot of naysayers want you to believe, Joss has never once said he is through with Firefly, it is just a matter of someone willing to foot the bill.

I thought the best funded project on kickstarter was only around 6 million dollars. We'd probably need more like 60 million for another movie. Actually probably even more because surely kickstarter takes their own percentage of that money. Setting out on a project that requires it to be ten times the most popular project ever on kickstarter seems like an unreasonable goal.

Good points.

Fact is, Joss doesn't need Kickstarter to raise money. This is the guy who decided to do a Shakespeare movie on a whim, who pretty much did Doctor Horrible as a weekend project. He's a master of the shoestring budget. The Firefly pilot, which honestly could have screened, cost--what?--10 million? Episodes of Buffy were done for two million or less. Even if we factor in inflation, Joss could do an entire SEASON of Firefly, an entire SERIES of movies, for half of what AVENGERS or DKR costs.

The rights are a factor, of course. Universal, I believe owns the movie rights while FOX has the TV rights. But, honestly, in Hollywood, rights aren't necessarily that big a deal. Money fixes everything, and success greases the wheels. If Joss demanded that Disney acquire the rights of Firefly for him as part a deal to direct AVENGERS 2, they would, and it wouldn't cost them all that much, since FOX already has a rights-sharing deal over some of the Marvel characters. Indeed, it's not uncommon for multiple studios to support an expensive project as a way to share the wealth (or, more cynically, limit the risk).

If Joss wants to do another Serenity--heck, another Firefly (because they're really distinct entities, artistically and legally)--it could be made to happen within the studio system.

Just wanted to point out that Joss has continued to feed us pieces of the story via the comicbooks. While not my favorite medium, I do appreciate the 'verse is still alive and kicking.

I'm well aware of the comics. I was specifically talking about a movie or TV series.

The comics bring up another interesting point, though. I feel like there has been a progression within the comics of Joss "ceding control" as time has gone by (it's almost as if he's "given" Dollhouse and Firefly to his two brothers to control). I can't help but think that's another factor, given how closely he personally protected Firefly up to, say, Better Days.

I think the biggest problem is time. No matter how much money Joss is given to make another Firefly movie or series to much time has passed for him to ever make it what he wanted. I don't think he would re-boot the series with new actors because at this point those people are the crew. He also can't just pick things up were they left off because the actors have aged.

As far as I can tell this is just an urban legend. There have been many dates that have come and gone where people claim Fox will no longer have rights to the franchise. However, there's never been any proof. Frankly it doesn't even make sense. Fox studios bought the idea. They didn't lease it. They have the rights forever unless there was something weird in Joss's contract.

If this is somehow about Fox networks rights to air the show then I think those have long since expired. That's why reruns are on the science channel. Though I could be wrong about this too.
