I don't have any love for The Witcher.

But I hope for the fans that IV has nothing to do with the show, that it's written by the same team that did the previous entries, and that it's good enough to make up for the shitty TV show they got.

I feel really bad for them, because I think their loss is a very large part of why I won when we got the Fallout TV show that we did.

We had to watch them destroy Witcher, Resident Evil and Cowboy Beebop to name a few, by the time they got around to Fallout.

We told them this was going to happen.

I think it's pretty hilarious how this seems to be happening everywhere all at once right after Trump got reelected.

Maybe if you were charged with writing about video games you should have stuck to writing about video games.

Every outfit that gave The Last of Us 2 a 10/10 or 100% is going to be shut down. They are on life support right now if they haven't shut down already.

Good riddiance.

Funny how your magazines made for white boy nerds were 100 times more successful when they were written by white boy nerds, innit?

Why don't they do what they did in the old days and offer different servers to play on for people who want a different experience?

What if you were that guy who's two favorite things to do combined was play Witcher 3 and do political trolling while T-bagging your fallen foe? They just fucked your day for no reason.

We already figured out very long ago in video games how to adjust the difficulty of the games and offer you different experiences through the challenge levels.

Just allow people different options for servers to join up on based off of their enjoyment of and tolerance levels for shit talking and verbal abuse while playing games.

I'm an old dude. If I ever wanted to play the Witcher 3 online, I wouldn't want my mom there slapping me around if I dropped an F Bomb. But at the same time if I had kids and my 10 year old was playing it, I don't think they'd need to be subjected to the the most vile shit that comes out of people's mouths when they're saying it into a mic from the safety of their room and the false sense of anonymity that only comes from cursing somebody out without looking them in the eyes while doing it.

Subjecting kids to this en masse is obviously unacceptable, and it would behoove everyone if the companies making these games did a better job making sure that's not happening before Big Daddy Government gets involved and ruins everything for everyone. But it doesn't mean you need to turn Witcher 3 and all online game servers into Demolition Man in the process. And I'll tell you what... Even I wouldn't choose the maximum leeway servers myself. I wouldn't want to listen to those people any more than any of you would. But the point is, that the people who do want that experience would be free to have it.

Hell... you could even do all of this without invading privacy. You don't need to do things like require a credit card to prove that you're an adult. You could just sell your hardware (PS5/XBOX/ETC) with a random parental lock code built in and turned on that should in theory only be able to be turned off by the adult who bought the system. AND MAKE SURE YOU SPEND MONEY ON A CAMPAIGN EDUCATING THE PUBLIC THAT YOU'RE DOING THIS AND EXPLAINING WHAT IT MEANS. You could also do this with the software with outfits like Steam and GoG having a random parental code turned on by default when you first download and install it on your device. But even all that is moot anyhow since you already need somebody who is an adult paying for full games and/or monthly membership fees with a credit card if you're playing any of these new games. So just make sure that the only user on the account who can change the parental control settings is the one who's paying the bill.

You could even take that a step further and allow the parents a range of severity on the controls for the kids. If there were 5 levels of tolerance for bullshit on the servers, which would in theory all have a clearly stated TOS stated saying what you can and can't get away with on that level, the parents could have more leeway when it comes to what they're comfortable exposing their children to. I'm sure we can even have a 90's teen movie level of shit talking for the kids on one server, and a completely sterile environment heavily monitored by AI for the parents who don't want to expose their kids to anything and keep them in a bubble their whole lives too.

And really, that's what the sterile government approved version would really be for. I'm sorry, but I don't think a lot of kids under 10 should even be playing most of the modern Triple A games that are coming out these days unless it was designed and marketed specifically to them, so kids this young for the most part shouldn't shouldn't even be on a Witcher 3 server in the first place so the hyper-sterile server shouldn't even exist for this game. It's all pretty great storytelling these days when the people making the games are c

Hey Jaynez. I never asked you this before, but I was wondering if you were aware of the retro-game hacking scene at all. I don't know why I've never asked you before since you seem to appreciate both Asian culture and video games. At least I think you like games?

The hacks back in the old days were pretty stupid stuff. Just kids playing around. I remember playing my first Super Mario Bros. hack and it was something like "Super Dickieo", where Mario was replaced with a walking ball sack that got "big" when you got the mushroom, and it looked like a 2nd grader did it in MS Paint.

But recent hacks have done pretty amazing things. People have basically created entirely new games and stories from the ground up using old assets and even creating new ones of their own. They've figured out how to expand ram and use every space of unused ram they can find to small quality-of-life improvements to telling a brand new side story of an old RPG. They've even figured out how to make single player games playable by two people at the same time. Crazy stuff.

My favorite aspect of the hacking was always the translations. There were a ton of games made in Japan that never saw the light of day here. Most of them probably for good reason, but we missed out on a lot of good stuff. I've been playing a lot of them over the years pretty much since the beginning. I think the original Nintendo has something like 400 or 500 translated games now. Some of these translations are from places other than Japan too. There were some official games released in places like France that never got an English release, and people have even translated bootleg games that came from places like China, Taiwan and even Brazil. The regular Nintendo became huge in those three places especially, long after we'd moved on in America. Somebody figured out how to clone all the internal bits and they were making all sorts of illegal clone systems, and there were still companies making new games for it into the mid 2010's.

The only reason I brought it up is because of an article I just read today about a translation that was made just last year. I started playing it the other day, thinking it was going to be a pretty brainless early RPG. I wasn't wrong, but the dialogue is hilariously awful. One of the reviews I read for it before I tried it out was absolutely scathing and I thought they were joking when they said the script was written by A.I.

Then I played it and I thought it either had to be translated by A.I. or somebody is pulling a massive freakin' troll on us.

But then I found this article...

SNES RPG Light Fantasy Gets AI-Assisted English Translation

https://www.timeextension.com/news/2023/07/snes-rpg-light-fantasy-gets
-ai-assisted-english-translation

Quote:

The Super Famicom RPG Light Fantasy now has an English-language patch.

Developed by Advance Communication Company (a Japanese studio which also ported the first three Ys to the console) and published by Tonkin House, the game hit Japanese shelves in 1992, but was never localised for Western release.

It got a sequel in 1995, also for the Super Famicom. This too was never released outside of its homeland.

The new translation patch by Zarby89 was created with the aid of Deepl, Google, ChatGPT. AI apps are increasingly being used in this way to translate the large volume of text contained in Japanese RPGs.

No shit... I should have assumed somebody would be the first to do that. I'm actually surprised that it took that long, now that I think about it.

I'll tell you what... It's a good thing this is a relatively simple RPG because the dialogue is only absurdly decipherable. You're basically getting nothing but nonsense word salad thrown at you outside of the bare-bones structure of a story, and none of the dialogue between NPCs is ever helpful. Sometimes you figure something on your own and realize that one of those dialog boxes actually was helpful, but because

I remember lot of it, there were mixes of people on the streets and someone had a spare room for the young teens to hang my of us at same aracdes or shared games when young. There would be some big tough looking adults having a beer and smoking cigraeetes as they played and were claiming or hogging an arcade machine as their own. I think there are still lots of sites for 'Emulators' out there and ROM HACKING dot net, I remember the days when strange out of the way Arcade bowling hall bar sites would mix up characters from different games, you would get weird adult spacey rocker pop culture stuff in the 'Arcade' that should not be in the game. Were they drawing in these characters and adding in these sound clips. The woman would look more sexy, you would get infinite ammo and fireballs from one game appear inside a totally seperate game, ammo and bullets from one game appear in another artist entertainment property. Your gaming character would double jump, tripple jump it would defy the normal game physics and change gamer gravity or run at super speed. I don't know where these 'hacks' came but they would make an old arcade that people got bored of playing 'super fun' again. from magazines? I remember seeing an advert from NYC and one from Amsterdam, maybe they the earl coder, artist music programmer people, maybe they were chips or eletronic boards sold in the back of a computer magazine when hacking as chip, casettes, cd and floppy disc and you didn't even have a real 'internet but they found their ways into Aracade Machines around the world long before people had Xbox or Nintendo or Sony or Personal Computers. Maybe they guy who owned the bar or bowling alley was in on it allowing his machines to get 'hacked'. These days you can even go back and find a way to Download Free ROM Hacks of an 'Arcade' game that only a select few knew off but I don't know how they networked back then, maybe cassttes and cartriges and cds in the mail?

One hack was to make a game more enjoyable, they simply hacked yoshis island crying baby Mario to remove the crying baby sound and make the game more plesant. Another started to add colors to your black and white gameboy. Some hacks simply made your game 'work' better if you moved and bought a game the US game might not work as it uses 60Hz power frequency, while Europe uses 50Hz in its cartriges, Brazil and Japan mixed 2 types in their tv broadcasts and voltage so things could get really wonky if somebody had something from Asia or Latin America. Then you had slow down Rom hack or Fast Rom to speed up your game by 33% the improved frame rate would improve the gaming experience making the movements more smooth and making games more 'touchy' and responsive.

were hobbyists reading mags and then learning how to do modding on these Arcades

some of the hacking seemed to require a little eletronics circuit board experience...were these hacked Arcade boards built in a HK, Taiwan, LA, Amsterdamn sweat shop and then shipped across the world on the black market? maybe people just did it for fun, I never understood the economics of it but it seemed to be early 'Pirate Hacker' days like Phreaking or Phone-Hacking

Universal ROM?
