Before most folks outside of college football had heard the name Sandusky, at least for now what he's so infamously known for, there were lots of folks who wish Joe Pa had the decency to let go his grasp on Penn State and enjoy his well deserved latter years in life.
Much like the late Bear Bryant, who died about a month after his final day as coach @ Alabama, Paterno simply could not see himself as anything else than a coach of Penn State.
40+ years at a university, and the suits didn't have the dignity to fire Joe Pa in person. Made him call THEM, and then fired him, over the phone.
He sure as hell messed up by turning a blind eye on what Sandusky did, but still...hell of a hard way to go, after all he did.

Indeed - you win lots and lots of American football games but when you ignore systematic child abuse, suddenly everyone's like "You're a bad guy". Come on, he won lots of football games! Let's put a pin in this whole 'children being raped' thing and focus on him having won football games. Lots of them.

Point of fact, Paterno didn't technically turn a blind eye on the child abuse issue, but he did the next worst thing. He kicked the report up to his superiors, and then went on about his business. He said himself he should have done more, but 10+ years after the fact, and who knows how many more 'incidents' took place, it's kinda hard to explain that to the kids and parents , or anyone else, why more wasn't done.

I heard he actually died months ago but his wife only felt it necessary to report it to senior officials. Oops.
