Okay, so it's not sci-fi, but is anyone else watching this show?
I like horror, but I'm picky. I like SUSPENSE, not gore; thrillers, not splatter. And this show scares the shit out of me. I get actual physical anxiety just knowing it's coming on; the opening credits creep me right the fuck out. I watch an episode and I don't feel so much like I've watched, or enjoyed, but rather, SURVIVED.
It uses some of the techniques and cues from stuff like Paranormal Activity - that feeling that you have to watch the whole screen all the time, lest you miss something creeping around in the background - as well as visual cues from classics like The Shining, obscure audio references (like Bernard Hermann's whistling song from the 1968 thriller "Twisted Nerve", which was also used to good effect by Tarantino in "Kill Bill Vol. 1")
You get the sense, bit by bit, that there are rules at play here, and there are ghosts, and there are the things that haunt the haunted, but there are also things that haunt the haunters. Dylan McDermot and Connie Britton are probably the weakest parts of the show; the rest of the cast is stellar, and amazingly creepy.
