I'm fairly suspicious of Anonymous, which I think has a lot of markings of being an arm of TPTB, their media attention, target selection, etc. though like "Al Qaeda" it's a vaguely enough defined group that anyone can claim to be it, and the media can attribute anything to it.

was some sort of trick to get us to defend Facebook, the best friend of TPTB.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

They always seem to tell us what the plan is, they're like cartoon supervillains, unable to keep themselves from monologuing.
Facebook IS a useful arm of TPTB... But it's served its useful life, and people are becoming aware of its real nature. They're attacking themselves using popular sentiments in order to get us to accept the new big thing in social programming.
Which is apparently some sort of free and open source technology they've developed and are planning to distribute.
Federated and federation does not mean what the quoted person in the article says it means.

Anonymous may be getting in over their heads in other ways.

I'm afraid the drug cartels don't have quite the respect for due process and right to protest that western governments show.

I'm wondering what you think the solution to facebook is and how it helps the so called powers that be?

Well, it's fairly well known that Facebook activity is monitored, I think even you might agree with that. But as people start to realize that, and also simply as the site ages as a social hang-out, it loses users, who migrate somewhere else. Something similar you might recall happened to MySpace.
But to properly monitor the citizenry, some jump needs to be made to the new scene - which right now is probably twitter, but from here it sounds like there's some plans to release some actual software to accomplish some of the same goals. Making it open source and free makes it more appealing to their target demographic (everyone).

I do agree that Facebook activities are recorded and you information is gathered. The thing is it does not get any more information then what you give it. Plus, I think when ever you have any type of social network that allows people to communicate as facebook of twitter everyone will be able to see what you are saying. That is kind of the point.
The thing with open source is that people could quickly modify it to prevent it from gathering any information.
