Well, they would, DMAAN, save for a couple factors, and while I do kinda mean this in a snarky way, it's no less true for all that.

One, Michigan doesn't have so much of that self-defense is criminal kind of attitude, and is less restrictive on the means and ability to do so - which means more of them "fail to prosper" upon tying to rob or harm someone who has the means and the will to do something about it.

Addendum to that, I was driving a cab in Flint(1) when the Governor of the time, Granholm, finally put her boot up the ass of the city PD not respecting shall-issue CCW, and in the month or so following that, there was a mass-exodus of these bastards, and guess where they went ?
Why, somewhere that victims were less likely to blow a hole in them.

Two, those that did remain are apparently far more likely to actually hit their target when they start blazing away - plus they're far more likely to move in and finish them off, as opposed to the simple fling lead and run kind of thing most do.
Not that this is a GOOD thing, honestly - but it does reduce the numbers quite a bit, and hitting less bystanders is a plus no matter how you look at it.

Three, in Detroit specifically they've got more than the Police to worry about, folks like Jackrabbit, The 300, and other neighborhood factions who are sick to death of the bastards, and if you push it too damn far your ass will *disappear*, instead of being slapped on the wrist and tossed back into the community.

Mostly though, it's a matter of where the victims are - see, when I was driving that cab, I wound up servicing the neighborhoods other cabbies wouldn't cause I can talk to the "bad element" on a level encourages detente - they weren't gonna mess with the only guy who'd come down there for em, especially when he was a bit forgiving on the fare if you happened to be short - anyone who would consider it was risking a beatdown from the rest just for considering it... and these yahoos loooove to talk shit, they do, so I got to hear all about their business and doings, plus the obligatory smacktalk and bullshit.
Which meant I was right there with my ear to the ground when most of them, fearing they were gonna get shot by the next would-be-victim cause of that shall-issue CCW thing, chose to take off to Chicago or Madison instead, where the victims are conveniently disarmed in advance.

Downside to it was that Flint became a ghost town soon thereafter, although apparently as of late it's prettymuch back to horrible, but that has more to do with other factors, not the least of which is the blatant and extreme racism of the local PD - who have apparently chosen only to service certain areas and leave the rest to swing unless they need to pump up their budget by seizure/forfeiture - the gang in blue is the most dangerous one up there, for some folk.

Anyhows, gangbangers here ain't so much a problem cause of the high mortality rate, you see.

Yeah, that a couple of folks have conflicting accounts, or that ONE city councilwoman, who wasn't there, disputes what most eye witnesses say, not really carrying all that much weight w/ me.

I heard this from several sources, not just the one article.

And it seems to be happening in other places, not just Illinois...

Last night’s events are currently under review by APD, Peachtree TV, the City of Atlanta Parks Department and the Conservancy.”

One man who went to the park with his wife and some friends told the AJC in an early morning e-mail Friday that about 15 minutes into the movie, “everyone’s attention was diverted to the back end of the event where a group fight was taking place.

“There seemed to be no police presence and after about 10 minutes of this brawl, it broke up with a group of people running into the dark,” the man, who asked to be identified only as Ron, wrote. “Just as things started to settle back down, a few gunshots rang out and the crowd started trampling the area trying to flee the scene.”

Some other movie-goers, however, said they didn’t hear any gunshots, but that they did hear a Taser being used by someone in the crowd.

“It was an absolute mob scene, from the Chick-fil-A girls getting mobbed trying to hand out free sandwiches to the complete lack of respect for the people watching the movie,” said Marc Freund.

“After enduring the first 30 minutes of the movie with people walking around and screaming, we decided to leave,” Freund told the AJC. “As we left, we heard a Taser going off in the back, followed by people screaming and running.”

“There was some background noise that started to get louder and louder in that area, and then suddenly as it got really loud, people right behind us were screaming and running away,” said Hannah Lodge. “The crowd was fairly hysterical.”

Midtown resident Jeff Keesee said there were “gangs of kids roaming the aisles, doing stunts to get crowd reactions. People just standing around talking, yelling — disrespect, rudeness, unruliness — a total disaster.”

Ron wrote that as his group headed to their cars, he saw a group of “high school-aged kids” throwing rocks at passing vehicles. One of the rocks “completely shattered the back window” of one of the cars, he said.

He said many of the children in the crowd were “scared and crying.”

Keesee said he didn’t see a single police officer as the situation got “completely out of control.”

The weekly movie series began on May 27 and is scheduled to continue on Thursday nights through June 24.

Conflicting eye witness accounts are common. Folks from different vantage points can see different things, or come across a situation before or after a specific incident has taken place. They can honestly say " I was there, and I never saw that happen" , but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just as 2 folks can watch the exact same event, in real time, and come away with differing accounts.

These reports are making the local news, despite what the local chamber of commerce or political leader's wishes. YOU may want to go w/ the version of all this which is skeptical that there's anything at all to these stories. Another

And SEVERAL sources dispute the account, as well, not just 'ONE city councilwoman who wasn't there".

You can say the same thing, over and over, as often as you like. Repeating it doesn't change anything. I know your idols have told you, repeating a lie often enough will make it the truth, but it never does.
