I finally realized it. Sure, there is great writing, character development, special effect...yadda yadda..but what sets Firefly apart from Angel / Buffy? DUH! The characters are REAL! "Dear, you live on a space ship. " LOL... No, really... hear me out.

We're not dealing with 15-20ish yr old kids who have no clue about the world other than their 'special powers ' or book smarts. Mal, Zoe, Book, Jayne...these are just regular folk! No eternal damnation on Earth living as a perpetual 28 yr old stud .. no exFred like evil Goddess...the folks of Serenity have seen war, dealt the every day realities and lived a mortal life, and survived. That element, along w/ all else that gets tossed in the mix w/ this show is , to me..what makes it so special and unique to Joss's other works, and anything else on t.v.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Exactly, one of the things I love about Firefly is that it's almost as if an invisible documentary crew slipped about Serenity and just started filming. Like Mal says,"It's not a better hand, it's called a life." to YoSafBridge.

True it's a pretty darn exciting life by most people's standards, but it completely fits with my idea of what living on the edge of frontier space would be like.

Pain is scary...
