Whoa, whoa, whoa: relax! This is just my opinion. I think it will be distracting TO ME to see David B. in Serenity because I've watched him for so long on Buffy and Angel as Angel. It's only natural to associate a person with a character they have played for over 5 years. Hell, on Angel the other night, I automatically screamed "Jayne!" when Adam Baldwin came onscreen. (And yeah, he looked like Jayne, because Jayne is just Adam Baldwin with a goatee...just because the clothes and mannerisms weren't the same doesn't mean he doesn't look like himself).
It's not as if I have anything against David B, he's a great actor, but I think if there are going to be crossovers among shows, it should be kept away from Firefly as much as possible. Going back and forth between Buffy and Angel isn't too much of a stretch of the imagination because they are the same genre (and Angel's a spinoff, crossover characters make sense).
I even felt it was a bit distracting to see the guys that played Dobson and Tracey because of their roles on previous Joss Whedon shows. Even knowing Womack was on the tv show Sentinel was a bit distracting. It just takes away a bit of my suspension of disbelief.
I'm not saying that there are only certain actors that should be allowed to be in Serenity, but I feel that Joss should stay away from using the huge iconic ones who had their own shows like DB and SMG.
Again, JUST MY OPINION.

sorry if I sounded un-lax...
I can assure you, I'm totally laxed
my comment is just that I love seeing my favorite actors working - and if they are sufficiently talented then I never find it a problem.
For instance, I'm a huge Kevin Kline fan, and if you see him in Sophie's Choice, and you see him in Pirates of Penzance, and THEN you see him in A Fish Called Wanda, then you have really seen such different characters and performances that I would think you wouldn't find it distracting...you would forget the previous performances while enjoying the current one.
I just personally think it would be a tragedy if Joss' best actors could never work with him again just because their old shows ended.
having said that, I will agree w/you that sometimes the characters seem too similar, I mean Knox was too much like what he had played in BtVS and Firefly...and Dobson too...

I think it was gina a few weeks back at a convention who mentioned that david boreanaz might have a role in the movie so the magazine has probably just picked up on that rumour I doubt they have any new info. Ive got to say though I would prefer him not to be in the film, nothing personal I think hes a great actor and I love angel but Id prefer the film to stay away from the buffy/angel connections as I think it might put a few people off seeing it.

If David Boreanaz does get into the movie, I will be hoping and praying he isn't someone with an accent. I'm imagining his 'Irish' accent, and I'm very scared.

Sounds interesting. I don't know who the guy is, but it's no surprise that Joss hired inside of his normal group.

Gotta agree to the point that yes, you can't help but think of previous characters when you see an actor in something else. I mean let's face it I'm still trying to figure out when Angel & Dido had their romantic fling. (OK I'm kidding) Especially in the Whedon Verse. Ner the less I like the idea of David B in Serenity. He's a great villan & just like Nathan in Buffy.

Well I *personally* think that if they just give David B. a good outfit, he won't look at all like Angel. Angel's got the black trenchcoat style thing going for him. Take that away, put him in an Alliance/doorman outfit, or one of those creepy corporation suits with blue hands, or put him in a swat outfit nishka style, and he'd look completely different. Also, a haircut or a beard could be arranged.
Trust me, the suit makes the man.
which explains why I loaf around in khakis and a t-shirt all day long... :P
Ain't. We. Just.

Bad bad pun -- but made me smile at the end of the semester, so thanks.

Valid point - its a concern for all TV actors that make the leap to film, and I think for that reason its rare they make their first few leaps into a like genre (particularly difficult for those SF/Fantasy actors).
Duchovny avoided anything remotely X-Files like while with the series, then went for Evolution (which as a Ghostbusters fan I love - I know they are all the same movie remade over and over). I'm not sure if Patrick Stewart would have taken X-Men (even if he could have) while filming TNG, and even SMG went for some other roles before going for Scooby Doo (good call there then) -
my theory appears to break down around about the film Valentine, but its one of few exceptions I can think of.
