Sorry, but I happen to be in conservative Texas. Fortunately, I'm in the lone liberal outpost in Texas (Austin).

Pardon me! I spent a summer in the most conservative part of conservative TX, so I do tend to associate the worst of red state evil with that state. And Bush is from there, which can never quite be forgiven. And hey - they both start with T, right?

OK, but I also hung out in Austin a bit. That's a damned good place.

It was like an island of happy sanity, an oasis in the desert, where logic and reason somehow thrived.

I went to Austin to play a tournament of roller blade hockey in the parking lot of a computer tech company. In Dallas, where I lived that summer, the roller bladers had to stick to the disco roller rinks. You know, because the parking lots were full of the wholesome suburban white teens dealing drugs while the Chicanos made a dollar an hour mowing their (the white kid's) mom's lawns.

I wish I was making that up.

First off, shiney story Mal4Prez. Nice to here of folks who ought to be good people being good people.

Secondly, we just love to pick on the small folk, er, I mean small town folk, don't we? It's like blaming the woman for a relationship's failure or blaming black people or Muslims for crime and violence. They can't read or use the internet right? They'll never know.

Sorry 'bout the rant, wasn't directed at you or any one person. I just get tired of hearing the 'small town people are savage ignoramuses and such.' I hear people used to say things like that about African American's back in the day before it we called it racism. In my opinion assuming the worst of the south or small towns based off of a few isolated incidents is just as bad (though perhaps not as severe) as believing every middle easterner or muslim is some nutjob jihadist. Okay, rant finished.

I don't think this kind of situation is unique to small towns. I'll bet some grossly negligent actions, or perhaps inactions, of state funded employees have happened in your shiney bastion of civilization as well. But down in the south, where you know most everybody, things like that are just a mite more personal. It's not as easy to just think of it in terms of numbers.

I grew up in a small town, HappyTrader. Spent 15 formative years there. While some of the people, as individuals, were lovely, there was a prevailing attitude of ignorance, resentment, and helplessness that I will NEVER go back to. I visited it last summer after more than a decade - yep, there's a few good ones who I have a soft spot for, and even a few pretty spots in town, but the place as a whole ain't for me. Shot me first. No kidding. I won't live like that again.

Did you ever read the buried novel about Smith County TX? I got a pdf copy off of wikileaks 2+ years ago, and it spelled things out in a way that reminded me of my old days. Try it, if any sites have it up for real. I'd like to base a novel off it, and not the watered down Holloywood BS that got into that movie RUSH. Nope. It should be a story a corruption by the head-up ass people in charge and the lengths the rest of us go through to survive.
