How about both?

Oh, and just in case anyone doesn't think some folk are crazy enough to take an online spat into real life, remember that some nimrod tried to firebomb my house over one, as I mentioned before, and here's a more recent example of that kinda crap.

Some folk really are that cracked, which is one of the reasons I don't just hand out a bullseye, yanno.

So Frem, how about both a sane society and an armed one?
Firebombed, really?
Shit dude, sorry.
That does suck.

"Liberals like yourself"
Hello,
There are no liberals like myself that I know of. It could possibly be because I'm not a liberal.
"You should name a few of the factors that you believe could account for the drop in murder."
I really don't have enough information to explain the murder rates in the U.S. and elsewhere. But it seems clear to me that the murder rates are correlating to factors other than gun ownership.
I don't know why murder was at an all time high in 1980 (10.2) or why it dipped sharply through till 1984 (7.9) or rose up again in 1986 (8.6) or dipped again again in 1987 (8.3) only to climb in 1991 (9.8) and descend steadily until 2000 (5.5). Gun control advocates say the Assault Ban explains the decline of murder in the 90's. I don't think they are right any more than you are. The rate has seen historically low deviation since 2000, fluctuating only + or - .2, whereas in the 80's they fluctuated + or - 2.2. That's 11 times the movement in the murder rate during the 80's than what we have now.
I can't account for all of this based on gun ownership and distribution. So, without knowing all the reasons why, I can definitively say that gun ownership isn't IT. The One Explanation. I can't even credit it as the Top explanation, since much of this variation occurred during times when gun ownership didn't experience similar variability.

Well, with a sane society you wouldn't have much need of em, not defensively - but then you don't have much "need" of a spare tire or fire extinguisher, and it's still a good idea to have one handy, neh ?
It's not like I ain't especially fond of the second amendment, hell I think anything man portable should be legal without question, and it should require a special hearing to strip someone of their right to bear arms even if they HAVE committed a felony crime (given that damn near everything is).
ETA: Yes - some nimrod managed to social-engineer an AOL Customer Service rep into handing him my address by convincing them he was an estate attorney with important papers to serve, and then tried to molotov my place, but threw short, and between me winging buckets out the kitchen window and a neighbor with a garden hose, no harm was done.
But it was a damn solid learning experience, and one of the reasons I obfuscate any identifying info.

Hate to burst your bubble, but if you agree with liberal positions enough times you become a liberal. I personally don't believe you ever were a conservative, your phony ploy to bring conservatives to your way of thinking by pretending to be one of them has failed.

They may think what they please but statistics would prove them wrong. "Assault weapons" are used so seldom in crime that even if they all were confiscated there would be little effect on any related statistics.
