Oddball question of the night. Am watching Dances with Wolves (obviously) and I have always loved that scene where Dunbar is in the Major's office and he says
"I've just pissed my pants, and nobody can do anything about it..."
I have always just assumed he went nutso but I think the Major would have had a more elated look on his face. I noticed instead he just looked lost. Was he supposed to have syphilis or bladder cancer or something? It would explain the whole bullet in the brainpan thing...

well I know syphilis was definitely the STI of the day. shaded glasses (not unlike the ones we see Simon wearing at the opening of our BD pilot episode) were given out by doctors to syphilis sufferers to ease the sensitivity to light (this detail is lost on some Civil War reenactors I know who wear them for "period sunglasses" much to my amusement.
The phrase was I believe, "a night with venus, a lifetime with mercury" meaning for one night of... activity, one could experience a lifetime of immense pain, which doctors prescribed doses of mercury to be taken to dull the pain.
"...we need a hood ornament..."

Did ya ever hear the story of how Chlamydia got to be called "the Clap"? I think of all the STD horror stories they tell kids that that's the one that made me wait 'till 19... And I'ma gal, but that's just creepy.
Can't blame your buddies on the glasses thing, I don't ever go outside without mine, am horribly light sensitive. Hopin' to get lasix in 2012ish so I can at least wear some sexier sunglasses. I don't much care for transitions.

Anyone know any horror stories with STDs?
I knew a girl who intentionally gave her boyfriend an STD and then let him believe he gave it to her so she could "forgive him" and they could bond over it! I swear if I'd have known beforehand I woulda run her over with my car, manipulative whore...

The range at that time was like being castawayed on the moon. If you were to civilized it might take you over the edge. That did happen alot to people crossing the great plains. When I was at the Little Big Horn you get that feeling there because your so far away from anything.

I assumed it was syphillis...symptoms + historical consistency etc. haven't watched in a while, might have to revisit it.

So Boris- you're an Aussie, right? Have you ever been here? My kid watches an Aussie show about obnoxious girls and their horses, so when you type, that's what I hear in my head...To me, whenever I hear an Austrailian speak the main thing I've noticed is it seems all of the vowels are massively elongated. I was wondering what you- being in the field you are in- hear when we Yanks speak? I've heard people from other countries say we sound like slow idiots, not that a LOT of us aren't mind you...
Also, what's down there that'd be worth seeing if I ever won the lottery?

AAGH! Is the frightful show of which you speak "The Saddle club"? It's an Aussie/Canadian project. Most Aussies don't think negatively about American accents coz most of what we watch is American. As A speech Path, I am interested in the many different accents produced in the States...here we get variations of drawl broadness, so not so drawly in cities and more so as you get into the country. My accent varies according to who I'm talking to. Also I have a low voice for a female...I lowered it years ago when I started working with kids and realised they responded better to lower pitched voices.
I've never been to the States, but aim to make it to at least one Comic con in my lifetime...if I win the lottery I will shout you to a trip down here. there's lots of spectacular nature to see and some amazing beaches...art, culture, food...lots to see and do...and we are a reasonably friendly bunch too.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I'll be wanting to kill all 12 year old girls by the end of the year...

Yeah, but can you only stand on your beaches? I watch a lot of nature shows and you always hear horror stories about how Australia has more poisonous critters there than anywhere else. Box jellyfish and the like...
What kinda weird foods do you have there? At our local food festival, they always have weird stuff like chocolate covered crickets and 'Gator tails and deep fried oreos? You guys have an awful lot of moving critters I'm sure SOMEBODY has deep fried at one time or another!
I wish I could say we are a mostly friendly bunch, my area in particular people avoid direct eye contact like the plague. I've been to six Parent Teacher meetings (about 15 people) and I can't recall being spoken to yet.
