C'mon, Joss is a GUY! For all his pro-feminist cred, he's still a lowly male of the species.

Did this creep into Firefly, or was it a genuine and interesting plot device to keep Mal & Inara "Moonlighting?"

Which begs the question: are there obese or ugly Companions?

Sure, there's heavy, plain, and/or ugly ones.

Ugly is fetishized in some circles, for an escort to a classy social event a client might want a plain Companion so they're not outshone by the arm candy, and you can't tell me you've seen dollhouse and say that a heavy girl can't be gorgeous in her own right.

As for Inara's job, in the writing it's a plot device. Whenever Joss uses her job to springboard into risque or steamy territory, though, that's Author Appeal. Hey, they all have it, even the girls. I'm surprised Jane Espensen didn't treat herself to some eye candy in the episodes she wrote.

Nandi was ugly. That's why she was forced to whore on that barren rock of a planet in some forsaken t.v. dinner of a ' house'.

Ehm, I'd more describe Nandi as middle aged than ugly. Like with Sheydra, in the movie.

In retrospect, he was probably kidding.

She does have nice red hair and green eyes, though.

I mean, pretty is relative. Like, Felicia Day. She's not a classic beauty, like face structure wise.

But she's Felicia Day, there's something about the way she looks that's refreshing, you know? She has some kind of quality. I'd call her pretty even if she doesn't fit the usual definition.

Joss likes him some naked starlets. Makes casting calls more fun. That's what a man does.

If we're speculating about Companions, we need to imagine some future history because Firefly doesn't tell us enough about why they are highly respected. In early Core history there were many dual-career Companions who worked in fields related to human reproduction.

The medical researchers who developed the first completely effective vaccine for HIV were also Companions. The lawmaker who wrote the Alliance Constitutional amendment which declared promiscuity a basic human right was a registered Companion. The epidemiologists who stamped out sexually transmitted diseases in the Core were Companions.

Companion embryologists perfected artificial womb techniques (uncomfortably like "Brave New World"). Only the very rich and very poor in the Core give birth naturally. (Simon was natural; River was artificial for her mother's convenience.) And everyone knows that the psychiatrists who used brain scans for delineation of the scientifically proven boundary between healthy and harmful areas of "A Map of the Lands of Human Sexuality" were... Companions!

Companions have only been stymied in their effort to find a cure for sexual jealousy, so show them more respect. Everybody ought to quit asking about ugly Companions. Their minds are always beautiful.

And, by the way, they all receive the same salary. There is no competition between Companions about who brings in more money. Do you think Companions are like car salesmen at the same dealership, all competing with each other for customers and commissions? Never! That low behavior is for call girls.
