It was established way back in the 80s in the West-End RPG sourcebooks. Cracken's Rebel Operatives (I recently had to sift through my collection to look something up and came across it). Apparently the Rebel tech who came up with the idea was an undercover field intelligence agent (c. the Battle of Hoth).

(Possibly he may have been the one to "liberate" the Y-Wings from whatever museum they'd been stashed in since the Clone Wars.)

And the Y-Wing is a pretty cool ship. It just doesn't get as much press 'cause it's not as agile as the X-Wing or as fast as the A-Wing, but in the right hands, it's still a surprisingly capable dogfighter. I've taken out squadrons of eyeballs in a beat up pig.

It's still a damn sight better than that fire-magnet Ackbar calls a B-Wing.
