O God ! I hear you Iremisst. Have had my credit details stolen twice so I'm justifiably overcautious. I've been living with my parents for the last 4 years while I study so I get the horror of that too. I'm nearly 41 and in their eyes I'm about 12. but kudos to them for letting me move in otherwise I wouldn't be able to attend uni to become a speech pathologist.

Hmm... I can only remember of hearing a credit card company get hacked once in the last five years since I started paying attention.
The big problem, of course, is sites that would sell your information to any one who wants to buy it. Of course the biggest offender IS the credit card companies themselves, which can happen offline as well as on. They do have some interest in making sure the buyers don't out and out steal money, because that would get them a bad reputation, generally they sell to retailers who send you crap you're not interested in. But it isn't always the case that people buying your information are representing themselves honestly.
If you want to hide your bank accounts or credit cards when making online purchases, paypal is a good choice. Most places you can buy online from have a pay pal option, too, which makes things easy.
Also, did you have any computer viruses or malware problems at about the time your credit information got stolen? Recently, an increasing number of malware packages come with a key logger. The malware will change your internet settings to a proxy server, where everything you type gets uploaded, so someone who knows what to look for can often find your information easy if you're not careful.
Malware removal doesn't come with most anti-virus programs, which is suspicious in its own right, because it suggests some big players on the internet are complicit in malware distribution and that they might have deals with anti-virus companies. There's some evidence that google's ad affiliate is one of them, not surprising because of the tracking bullshit they pull on you to try to market specific ads to you.
There are some good free anti-malware programs though. The ones I'm most familiar with are malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy.

Using firefox with the adblocker and noscript addons will also help prevent your security from being compromised. Microsoft IE has huge exploitable backdoors. 9_9 Another sign they're all complicit...

Could Jayne have had a childhood "friend" (kid he bullied around into doing awful stuff and was generally a bad influence for) who was like Wash?
Just an interesting thought. I like imagining how the backstories of the characters might tie into the relationships they currently have with the crew.

My brother had his debit number jacked at a restaurant and they wired $1500 to someone, so it doesn't really matter,'net or not anymore, but I'm still leary- I don't even pay bills online.
I'm sure it's hard for your parents to look at you and see anything but "child! have to help child!" Now that my kiddo's doing more things by herself it's become a shear act of will for me not to wanna still help her get dressed, ect. But it's super nice they support you, though.
My mom kicked me out at 18 and a week and thoroughly encouraged me not to go to college as "Judgement Day is close at hand so why bother" OYE_VEY! Would liked to have gone but at the time I had NO ONE and NOTHING. Will have to try harder in my next life...
