I'm back from San Diego -- hungover, several dollars poorer and very tired, but pumped about this fall. It's always a blast to see all the cool new shit in one (rather large) space. I'll spare you all the details about Daredevil, Solaris, T3 and the Hulk, and get to the Firefly stuff.
Joss spoke to a huge roomful of the faithful -- 2000 people is my guess -- and gave us the lowdown on several subjects in Whedondom (FF/Buffy/Angel/Fray).
We saw the long FF promo spot from American Idol last week which looked good on the big screen. Then Joss showed us a five minute scene from the original pilot. It started with a shot of the "Serenity" cruising through space with some blues/bluegrass/roots music playing and cut inside to... (hold on minor SPOILERS in route)
Select to view spoiler:
Mal flushing a space toilet and cleaning up. He gets called to the bridge by Wash who tells him that someone on board has hailed an Alliance cruiser and that they've been told to hold course to be boarded. Wash says "we've got a mole on board" and Mal heads down into the cargo bay to confront the suspected traitor. He discovers that the situation is very different from what he thought and then all hell breaks loose.
I hate to reveal anymore, because it was a couple of real dramatic twists to the story. I was really impressed with the design of ship -- Joss did a tracking shot from Mal's quarters up to an interior corridor and then up into the bridge of the Serenity which gave you an idea of the size and layout of it. Serenity looked more like a WWII submarine more than a giant starship which I thought worked well with the whole blue collar angle. (Joss explained that the crew were generally working stiffs, not part of the elite.)
Other things we learned from the clip: Get your Chinese to English dictionary ready, Gina Torres (Zoe) remains totallly sexy and kick ass, Book packs quite a punch for a preacher and Adam Baldwin (Jayne) is as crazy and menacing as ever.
In the Q&A (which was dominated by Buffy questions -- big news: Faith is back in the Buffy/Angel house), Joss told us that Serenity would be going from planet to planet, but that alot of the story/show would take place on board the ship. He also explained that there was nothing alien (no latext) or mystical about the about FF, that it was about the humans... something about the differences in what the crew see when they stare into the blackness of space... shortterm memory fading... CharlieBlue help me out here.
At the signing following the Q&A, I also overheard Joss telling another fan that it looked like the 2 hour pilot would air just before Christmas. (A present worth waiting for!).

Probably the best thing I got were some photos involving Joss and light sabres -- 'Nuff said. I'll send them in when I remember to recharge the camera and upload them!

Excuse the epic length post.

Remember to send me the stuff when you're ready and I'll post it as a feature so that everyone can read/see it.
Bluegrass music, eh. I can see that working. A Reaver Ship hunting the Serenity to the music of "Deliverance".
