Could Joss Whedon be planning a new series with FX?

What ever happened to reruns? I can't find any good old shows to watch these days. The best hope for finding some random good TV is old movies randomly popping up.

Once full season sets became the norm, ratings for reruns dropped, so they have become less useful from a station's POV.

You seem to be equating budget with quality, but that's not nessesarily true.

Spaceship sets are more expensive than a doctor's office. Costumes that must be designed and made from scratch cost more than ones that can be purchased. CG shots cost a lot period, and those other shows have few or none. Even the restrained action on Firefly is bigger than action beats on most of those other shows.

Sure, there are ways to cut corners and such, but a show like Firefly is almost always going to cost more than a show like Damages.

Granted, Mark, but you misread me if you think I mistake budget for quality.

The key to ANY of those shows - and to Firefly, really - is that they are character-driven shows, first and foremost. Yes, sci-fi sets are going to be more pricey, but once you HAVE the sets and the wardrobe, it's essentially a one-time cost. The biggest chunks of the rest of the budget go to the large ensemble cast (now minus Wash & Book) and the CGI stuff.

So focus on the characters and stories, keep the CGI and "atmospherics" (exterior spaceship shots, etc.) to a minimum, and you can help hold the line on budget.

Still, though, it IS likely to be as big a budget as "Damages" (You don't think Glenn Close, William Hurt, and Ted Danson come that cheap, do you?).

And that last bit actually makes a pretty good case for an all-new cast. If you don't have to pay the Nathan Fillion-dollars to lure him away from Castle, there's all the more money to put towards sets, wardrobe, and CGI. And story. Always there's the writing to consider.

In honesty, I don't know what kind of salaries our crew are pulling on their other various shows these days. But I'll bet you all of their salaries that they get paid more than a group of unknowns would.


This is in no way a push to dump our BDH and re-light the Firefly with an all-new crew; I'm just pointing out ONE of the ways in which Joss COULD do something 'verse-worthy.

Who knows? It could be a Buffy reboot, or a Spike movie. Or Ripper. Or more Dollhouse. It's up in the air, but the suspense is delicious. :)
