One of my favorite comedians in the sixties...someone posted his "Pollution", so got me started. Some of those I remember best from the sixties:

My absolutely 2 favorites:

and a few others, for your morning giggle:

OMG, I let the genie out of the bottle... Sorry,folks...

( just, kiddin', Niki, OK?)

Most of his stuff is available on YouTube, including the stuff from The Electric Company, and my current favorite,
Sociology
Sorry, too much trouble to provide the link, but you can find it if you try.

I had all 3 of his records on RTR tape for a very long time...

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah, do I remember Tom Lehrer. Though he is generation and a half ahead of me, I was raised on his stuff.

"So long Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb..."

*****

When asked by an Australian newspaper about his silence since the 1960s and his legacy now, he commented that his particular brand of political satire is more difficult in the modern world.

"The real issues I don't think most people touch. The Clinton jokes are all about Monica Lewinsky and all that stuff and not about the important things, like the fact that he wouldn't ban landmines.

"I'm not tempted to write a song about George W. Bush. I couldn't figure out what sort of song I would write. That's the problem: I don't want to satirise George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporise them." ~ Tom Lehrer.

Whoa.

(Source: Wikipedia, so not much research on my part.)

I remember he had a show in the 60's called That Was The Week That Was....sort of a forerunner to everything that came after like HBO's Not Necessarily The News, and Mark Russell. He was very popular back then.

Thank you for bringing this up. More people need to be exposed to Lehrer's stuff.

I love "Vatican Rag" and "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park" the best, at least of what I've heard of his stuff.

Wasn't it David Frost who did TW3? I can't remember that well, but I'm pretty sure Lehrer might have been ON it...but I'm sure Frost was the host. How I miss that show, and yes, it was the forerunner of MANY things!

And thank you, Karel. It's great to hear how he felt about stuff, and tho' I miss him, I can sure understand!!!

I love Tom Lehrer.

I'm not nearly old enough to remember him from when he was actively making or performing his music, but I was introduced to his work via the elements song which my chemistry teacher played for the class one day. I've been a fan ever since.

You're more than welcome...and believe me, it's my pleasure! I posted a couple on the website I run, with the result that someone else answered my question above. Lehrer WROTE for TW3, that's the connection, and I didn't remember that at all. Ahhh, memory...what a fading thing it is!
